Re: Way underrated

i agree about GTA, even i criticized it at the beginning because i was expecting san andreas 2.0
but like tjohn i have gone back are replayed it maybe 4 times now, not just driving around killing people, but replayed the whole story, and every time i do it gets better. its like a fav movie you can watch over and over without loosing anything from it.

i loved Wet and Brutal Legend, both of those reviewed averagely, its purely personal i think.

The only information I take in from critics/review sites a games flaws......to an extent anyway

If a game apparently has major glitches, slowdown, screen tearing, etc etc, then I will stay clear.
I don't take it on board just because apparently the gameplay, or sound etc etc isn't 100% perfect (in the reviewers eyes)

Not a fan of fallout 3 or nv then I guess.

NV was shocking.

Still played it for the sake of the storyline.

The bugs drove me crazy though.

Under rated games - Brutal Legend. Aliens Vs Predator. The Godfather II. Ghostbusters (actually did this get good scores? Can't remember). Medal of Honor. The Saboteur.

Over rated games - Mafia II, Red Dead Redemption (good but its not THAT good).

this is just gamespot, but;

Aliens Vs Predator got 5.5/10. Bit harsh imo.  I also think this game was underrated. i rekon it was pretty good. story mode imo was solid enough, but MP could have done with a bit of work.

MoH got 7.5.  I dont think this was neither overrated, or underrated. it was kind of...three quaters there to being a solid FPS. But things like a COD-ish MP, and a short story mode let it down. Also i found it wasnt its own game - and nothing like the original series. Instead i thought it was a combination of BF and COD.

Ghostbusters got 7.5/10. I think its fair. was a good game. though i didnt play much of it, it was better than expected and i rekon the next one may be even better - just not sure about going all arcadey.

I also agree Mafia II was overrated. IMO this was a terrible game. if your not going to improve on the original - dont bother. I thought it may have been a good game...if it was released a few yrs ago, but i couldnt get over the bot-like AI in the open world, the terrible controlling of the character, and the average graphics. I understand story plays a big part, and often graphics are overrated - but seriously, in 2010 - in this generation of games - cant we have both??

Red Dead...hmm..i loved this game. Because it was kinda GTA, but not. (and i think GTA has become a bit overrated...the last GTA i enjoyed was Vice City, and ive lost interested in the others since then).

But i can see how you can put it in the overrated category. I still think it was a solid game, maybe not groundbreaking.

Sabetour got 7.5. Fair IMO. good game, i enjoyed the story - but it wasnt enough to make me buy it when there were other good games released at the same time. Also, again, average graphics imo.

I really enjoyed Fallout3. That will go down as one of my all time favourites of this generation. (havent played Fallout:NV because it doesnt seem they have fixed enough of those annoying glitches).

My number one Overrated - GT5.

I know it is what it is, and fanboys will love it...because its a GT game.

But seriously... nothing "wow" factor for me. and considering the length of time since the last GT, the amount of delay in the release, and the time and money put into it...

Perhaps a litle underrated - Fight Night: champion?

i found the story was good..not detailed enough, and could have put more cut scenes, or at least lengthier ones to really get to know the characters, and get a grip for the story.. but it was pretty good.

Also i think the physics for the characters, and the graphics were damn good.

Re: Way underrated

Overrated - God of War 3

It had moments of 'this is what the PS3 was made for' brilliance (like Uncharted 2), such as the opening level with Poseidon, and a couple of the boss fights - Herc, Hermes, and the Cronos level... but by n large it was largely GOW2 in HD, but with IMO a less interesting setting and story than the first GOW.

Underrated - Enslaved

Sure, I'm not doing it much service by the fact that I've back shelved it for every game I've bought since, and are yet to go further than leaving NYC, but the contrasted post-apocolypse setting to your brown Fallouts and yet to be released Rage looks really nice, and the character emotion I don't think has been seen in a game since Heavenly Sword...

Re: Way underrated

i didnt like god father 2 to much, it was easy plat though lol
and i honestly do think MOH was overated, it was hyped up and market to hell, then lasted a couple months and died, it was nothing new and felt rushed. full of spawn campers, and maps had bad choking points that severely unbalanced the games.

i think saboteur suffered more from lack of marketing than poor ratings, it was a great game, original story line, loads or things to do while free roaming.

Re: Way underrated

Yeah spose I should elaborate on my post

Brutal Legend - great game. Problem is/was that it is very niche. You had to like heavy metal music. have to like Jack Black. people hated the RTS bits but i found them not too bad. Something you don't see everyday. It really gets going as you go through it, you can tell its a bit low budget but i highly recommend and it goes for something like 10 bucks on trademe so why not give it a go for that I reckon. 8.5/10.

AVP - low expectations, but had great fun. Predator campaign was brilliant. Alien was alright but controlling it was tricky. Marines bog standard FPS but still ticked the boxes. Problem lies in that it all took place in the same places. Got why they did that but still playing 3 campaigns back to back was a bit of a drag. I never tried multi. It is good fun though, and cheap like Brutal Legend. 7.5/10.

Godfather II - isnt exactly a great game, pretty repetitive and the story blows. Actually shouldn't have put this here. It was fun though! 6/10.

Ghostbusters - pure fan service, liked the movies, loved how they did it. Game controlled kinda funky but was alright. looked like crap but again that was alright. Remember it being humourous which is rare these days. 8/10.

Medal of Honor - loved this. Actually liked the campaign, thought the focus on the camaraderie of the soldiers rather than a big bad guy was great, thought the story was engaging. too short and too easy though. Multi was awesome for me, i like flanking and it was rewarded so much. So many snipers completely oblivious. Probably heard the game was a sniper fest so thought they'd get in on it but clever play and thinking was really rewarded. Also really liked the choice of music in the credits, hated the new Linkin Park record but thought the song fitted really well. Unlike bloody Eminem in the COD credits, what the hell was that. 9/10.

The Saboteur - love the art design of it, haven't actually finished it yet, playing through it now. Hurts having just played LA Noire as it really doesn't compare graphically, but I'm quite enjoying it thus far. Except the cars handle really poorly.

Another one to add - F12010 - this is great for a simulator nut such as myself. Love GT5 despite its shortcomings, got this and was pleasantly surprised by how it plays. Heard its glitchy but no problems yet (touch wood). Playing on expert with no aids and manual gears is great fun, feels challenging. Love how they incorporate often overlooked aspects of racing eg drying line on wet track, dirt on tyres, brake lock ups, damage etc etc. Now that its being discounted I'd really recommend you pick it up but beware the learning curve is steep. 9/10.

As for Red Dead, I think its a good game but its just really hard to get into. Too much pointless horse riding. The characters are annoying in true Rockstar fashion. Every other aspect of the game is good though and I'm going to try finish it one day soon.

Re: Way underrated

i forgot f1 2010, the game is a really good race sim, it has a green track early in the first practice so its more slippery. they have marbles on the outside of corners making racelines all the more important. rain looks amazing but a little to easy to drive fast in the rain. i still cant stop playing this game

Re: Way underrated

I read Official Playstation Mag every month and their reviews are quite good.

AVP got 8/10 which I think was fair, I really enjoyed the game.

Brutal Legend got 8/10, I got this for $12 and loved it,

Ghost Busters got 8/10, I don't have this but def want it it's $20 at my local Target so will get tomorrow,

MOH got 8/10, I didn't really like it but not a huge cod fan either due to short sp and hackers in multi, givre me BF any day,

Enslaved got 8/10 and I really liked it, shame bout the sales as there will be no sequel,

and F1 got 9/10. Can't wait for F1 2012,

They get most right I think just a few they get wrong IMO, a few of the games mentioned here got good scores but poor sales is all. A few others like this are Singularity, Castlevania, Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, Vanquish, and The Sabatour were all overlooked and I recommend the lot of them, all really are good games!!
