Hi Friends

I just bought a PS3 and am now happy to be part of the PS3 community.

I have already started playing some games on my PS3. Now when I try to connect to PS Home or PS Store using my PS3, it says:

A system software update is required. Go to [Settings] > [System Update] and perform the update.

Doing this tells me that my system will be updated to release 4.00. My current release is 3.65.

I checked on forums and found that release 4.00 is giving lot of freezing problems in ps3, so, I want to hold it for now, till a stable release is available.

So, the question is: can't I connect to PS home with my current release? Does every PS3 user need to update their system to be able to connect to Sony's network?

Hi there,

You have to get this update to be able to use your console via the PSN.

Don't worry about it, it will be fine and it won't give you any problems.

Never listen to rumours, I've had a PS3 since 2007 and not one firmware update has had a bad effect on my systems.

I can assure you the update is fine; it's just a coincidence that many consoles breakdown during this time as with any other time. So to enjoy other benefits that SEN is offering via PlayStation 3 you'll need to update to v4.00. Like the others have said, don't listen to rumours or rants.

Thanks a lot Warren and Laras for your prompt and motivating replies...I will take this update, but, anyway, from a techy point of view, and being new to PS systems, am just curious to know why it doesn't work with my current PS3 release 3.65.

Do you mean to say that when a new PS update is released, say 4.10, I will again not be able to login into PSN even though I would have 4.0, until I take that update???

Do you think we made this ***** up?

How can people (myself included) who had more freezing then usual after downloading FW 4.00 just be rumours or rants? I had to rebuild the database and reinstall the FW to fix it. And from 2008 up until FW 4.00 I had stessed exactly the same as you and have never had a problem. 

OP despite what the PDL say, there is always a risk with any software update and you download at your own risk

Chances of having these problems are slim of coures.

ytevo79 you were playing Skyrim at the time which is a bugfest of a game with auto saves enabled and a well documented game for causing issues.

To the OP you'll have to update regardless if you want to use online services it was a mandatory update all consoles freeze from time to time its just some games and the PS3's prehistoric web browser make it a more regular occurrence.

It's so that if anyone ever comes up with a way of bypassing the various security systems on the console to run pirated games, etc. then they can release an update to patch the exploit and also prevent anyone who stays on the older, less secure, firmware from using any online features.

I was but I don't just play one game at a time do I? All my games I was playing began to freeze!!! Skyrim become worse after the update but I never said that was the issue at the time and put that to one side as a buggy game. However, I was playing BF3 as well at the time which never freezes, and American McGees Alice which never freezes and they both started freezing after FW 4.00 update. FACT!

Even the XMB froze but hey I guess that was Skyrim's fault as well?

I wasn't the only person either and several topics popped up and non were Skyrim related and all claimed their games were freezing more then normal after updating the FW. And to prove this (for me personally) after reinstalling and rebuilding the database my games stopped freezing. FACT!

Jeez what is wrong with you people having to defend Sony all the time? They aren't perfect all the time you know and things CAN and DO go wrong from time to time.

I updated and had no problem with freezing issues. Go for it.
