Why do i have so much PSN sign in trouble?

the title says it all really

i have a good internet connection that rarely fails and if it does a router reboot fixes it also my laptop and home computer are able to connect to the internet 100% of the time

im with sky for my internet

the funny thing is that it isn't totally broken sometimes i sign in immediately and stay on online for hours, other times i can barely get on and when i do i'm almost instantly booted back out, as i type this im pressing the "sign in" menu item for like the 20th time....

...and it just worked....oh no wait...no it didn't :smileysad:

can anyone shed any light?

TIA guys

Re: Why do i have so much PSN sign in trouble?

ISPs DON'T provide a constant quality of service if they did the words " UP TO " would never appear in any TV advert.
There are to many factors that alter your sign in time and connection to PSN.
Web browser use is no indication of PSN port traffic use. Web browsers barely connect over any thing but port 80, some times port 8080, there a loads of ports required for PSN use.
First UP is ISP and yes SKY had it's problems just like every ISP but in PSN case they were first in doing most things wrong.
SKY were the first ISP to have DNS problems when using PSN.
They were later found to be traffic shaping Non web browser traffic including PSN on there cheaper tariffs.
( Now VM have rolled this out as well. real nasty system. As users are not told when active in there area. )

Next is how legal is the Internet use in you're area. ( this effects All ISPs )
Extra illegal Internet hook ups drain the network in your area this can cause other peoples connection problem with lack of bandwidth and data over extra ports.

Next is over subscribing buy SKY in your area the result is the same as above. slow down due to to many user who just happen to want to be online with you. Reducing the amount of traffic data available to go to PSN.( this is random some people can be ofline randomly in your area )

Next is a router that just can't do DMZ/NAT/UPnP correctly with a mind of it's own.

Hope you get a stable connection back.

Re: Why do i have so much PSN sign in trouble?

cheers for the info graphite, i tried resetting system settings on my PS3 and re-adding my home network in case there may have been something dodgy that i changed at one point or another, the only other thing i can do now is to have a look at the settings on my router, see if theres something that might help there

thanks again man

Re: Why do i have so much PSN sign in trouble?

[ Edited ]

sorry for the double post, but i've managed to sort the issue out (for now anyway), i heard about DMZs on these forums somewhere and decided to have a look in to it, now my PS3 connects without a hitch!

i know that there are security risks with doing this but i'm sure if i'm careful i'll be ok

just to let any readers know how to do it...

once your PS3 is connected to your router find it's IP address under network settings (mine was 192.168.0.5)

open up you web browser of choice on your computer and enter your routers IP address (usually 192.168.0.1)

find DMZ settings (sometimes under WAN settings)

enable / tick box (if applicable) DMZ and enter your PS3s IP address

if my understanding is correct, what this does is throws all the ports open for this particular server (ie your PS3) allowing all traffic on all ports...which is where the security risk comes in.

i appreciate this is probably old news to a lot of you, but it was new to me, and i hope it helps others that are having problems

Re: Why do i have so much PSN sign in trouble?

The PS3 does not accept random connections from the INTERNET so a DMZ is ZERO risk on PS3.
Windows is another matter completely with DMZ OR UPnP, due to all the back doors left open to hacking.
Have fun.
