As soon as you put the drive into a new PS3, it's automaticaly formatted :smileyhappy: or if you want to do it before inserting it into another ps3, you could buy an enclosure and do it via a pc :smileyhappy:

So will this completely wipe the hardrive, and delete all my card details from the PS3 yeh ??

Re: Wiping PS3 Hardrive on a ylod PS3 ?

I read somewhere that if you take the hard drive out and then put it back in again  the PS3 will force you to reformat next time it's switched on.

So if someone buys it and fixed the YLOD they'll be forced to wipe the hard drive before they can use it.

Not a great solution because you don't know for certain your data has been wiped....  unless someone can confirm what I said?

not true, I believe :smileysad:

mate of mine has 2xHDDs which he switches on occasion, without being prompted for reformat :smileysad:

Re: Wiping PS3 Hardrive on a ylod PS3 ?

The PS3 automatically reformats any HDD if it wasn't formatted before by that specific PS3. So you can swap between 2, but stick them in a different PS3 and it will format it.

Re: Wiping PS3 Hardrive on a ylod PS3 ?

Ok thanks guys.

Ive also just got this confirmed by 2 people from Sony customer service.

As soon as you take the harddrive out of a PS3 you will need to then wipe it. So if you put the harddrive from the broken PS3 into another unit it will wipe it on startup. However the old harddrive from the working PS3 will also get wiped.
