My PS3 has a Yellow Light and I can't play any games. It wont even turn on for two seconds. I was wondering if there was a way to transfer from my data from one PS3 to another even though my PS3 has a Yellow Light. I was told Sony could fix the problem for $180, but at that rate I could by another Playstation. Any ideas?

No. You could search for the 'hairdryer trick'. That might allow your machine to run long enough to copy the data.

Sadly, regular making back-ups to an external hard drive is the only option

Its mindblowingly pointless paying Sony nearly the price of a new console when you can fix it yourself for pennies (dollars if you aren't from UK/EU).

Watch the 'Gilksy' method which is what I did to my old 40GB a few years back. I couldn't afford a new console at the time, but my fix lasted me 3 months which was more then enough to save for a new and more reliable slim. Some have been reported as less, others lasting a few years so you have nothing to lose provided you are competent with a screw driver and can follow simple instructions. 

Just look at it as a way to salvage your data, or even transfer it from your old console to a new one which is what I'd do if I could afford it
