hard drive upgrade...

Hi folks, i'm pretty sure this will have been covered but i just wanted to ask a specific question as i'm pretty capable with the mechanics of the upgrade, having swapped out my 40gb for a 320gb about a yearn a half ago...

thing is, my brother now wants to upgrade his, and i was wondering, does the new hdd still need to be formatted to FAT32 externally before installation?

the reason i ask is, having checked out some decent upgrades on amazon and looked at the reviews, some of them are using words like 'installed straight away with no issues' or 'installed and switched ps3 on, instantly recognized new hdd, formatted it for ps3 system n was up and running etc etc'

a little clarification would be greatly appreciated if possible:smileyhappy:

thanks

Further to what frodes said it's external HDD's that need to be formatted to FAT32 sport, the PS3 will always take care of any internal upgrade.

Re: hard drive upgrade...

Does the PS3 give any specific information other than 'not recognised' crocko?

Have you removed it and double checked it's seated correctly in the console?

That's because each PS3 encrypts each HDD differently. No to PS3's use the same encryption coding. So all your data will be tied to that machine the HDD was formatted on.

I assume thats what you mean by it's not recognising it.

Re: hard drive upgrade...

Would the new PS3 not just automatically format the 500GB HDD when he fitted it and switched the console on fritches?

Re: hard drive upgrade...

Remember the PS3 now stores part of the firmware on the HDD, so you will also need the firmware on a USB stick as well while your trying to install that 500gig HDD.
