Asking for some people to play online with is all well and good, but it's nice to have something in common.

What games do you like playing online, what area do you live in and do you have any passions?

People will more likely add you if they know they can play online with you and can chat about something as well.

Also, if you're in the same area, the gaming experience will be better

I didnt know the friends list was a competition. i only have 6 friends but they are actually friends. we all play the same games and always have a good laugh when online together
