That's not possible on releasing a downloadable PS3. PS3 game sizes are so big that our Internet connection is so slow. Even downloading demos from current PSN is a pain of waiting as it takes 45 mins to download 700mb on my 8mb connection. Even PSP Go is flopping in the UK, so I see digital downloading maybe another 10 years time.

as the person above said, the internet at the moment just is not fast enought to cope with such high usage and size, i would say that fast broadband is still at early stages yet.

I really think streaming is a bad idea...
Firstly, the people who run it aren't gonna give their bandwidth for free, so there will be a monthly charge for the service on top of the cost of the game, even for single player games.. I know Live does that now, but for example if I only wanted to play a single player games like Fable, I can chose not to pay for Live..
Secondly, most people love having something physical that they can hold... I know services like iTunes and Steam have taken a huge chunk from hard copies of media, but still CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray are very popular.. And there is the huge difference between having something digital on your own computer and playing it off a remote server.. Having it on your own device is more reassuring, the company cannot take it away from you whenever they want...
And thirdly, internet availability and laaaaaaaaaag!!! People in remote areas, countries with bad internet services (like mine) and people who don't have internet at home full stop are completely isolated by this business model... Here in Ireland we are only starting to get fiber optic connections in some areas, and of the people where broadband is available I would say 90% still have to make do with copper wire DSL.. Until I see drastic upgrades to the internet infrastructure here and in other countries I will never support any streaming based gaming model..

Firstly the Blu-Ray drive is here to stay. If there was to be a change in a future iteration of the PS3 it would be for a drive with a faster read speed. However, the Blu-Ray drive was expensive when the PS3 was launched and the cost of the drives has now fallen significantly.
Networked game services like On-live are interesting, but as has already been said by others the infrastructure just isn't there yet and it will be a long time before it is ready to support games equivalent to current triple AAA titles like Uncharted 2 or Assassin's Creed 2. PSN/Live Market place is the near future of console content delivery and even then most people are going to face significant wait times to download their games.
Eventually SONY will release a PS4 but before that the PS3 will receive the Arc motion controller (assuming that name sticks) and 3D gaming updates.

i agree with you all but looking at the end of 2010 beyond. why pay for the cost to manufacturer blue-rays disk when you can just sale it cheaper on ps store. i bet more profit is made from DLC its just up loaded to a server no added cost. the government has told all telecommunication to add 50p taxs on all lined phone lines to update the uk internet it will take time but it will happen. sony has said that the ps3 will be supported for ten years alot can happen in ten years.. im not sure whats cheaper manufacturer new console or build a super computer in one building? sony could easy ue the ps3 as a link up.
Where exactly are you getting your ideas from. I find you can currently buy games on disk by retail/sites cheaper than by PSN network for example. PSP Go is the best example. You can buy a PSP UMD game for £14.99, but Sony just put a retail charge at £24.99 on PSN. Sony says that will support PS3 for 10 years, it does not mean it be 10 years for the next hardware to come out. I see a PS4 in 2-3 years, plus it will still be using disks as it's too early for digital download.
