PS4 wont be out in 2/3 years try around 5/6 years . Theres no way they would bring a new one out in the next few years because it would be that early the only difference would be new design and a new software layout .

I can't see a playstation 4 coming out for a long while yet. Seeing as microsoft stated the other day that the xbox 360 will be around for a long time yet and they have no plans to make a new machine anytime soon.
Its all about the updates.

Both console manufacturers are committed to extended lifecycles for the current generation. But to think new machines are as far away as 2015 is mad. The oft quoted 10 year life cycle is allowing for overlap with the next generation of machines.
The current technology will have been through another value engineering revision at least and like the PS2, coexist alongside the next gen. I hope! to be hearing regular rumours of new machines in 2011 with launch coming sometime 2012.

I think they should keep the 250gb slims for now and just add different firmware updates to them. Too much confusion and annoyance if they release another PS3 with an added bit on i.e. 6000gb PS3

the big issue with next gen consoles is the fact that there is so much power in the current gen consoles that there is no justifacation for the foreseeable future to develop one. anything produced will only be a slight improvement over what we already have and the developers have yet to get to grips and use all the power of the PS3 and 360.
2012 is less than 2 years away, PC technology advancement has slowed down with raw power no longer being the thing that defines and drives new technology. its all about core numbers and information throughput efficiency now being more important than raw power.
the PS3 will be fine for another 5 years so 2015 is about right for next gen consoles, but i expect that new handheld consoles will appear in the next 12 - 18 months. so yes expect new conosoles in 1012 but not home consoles.

Or to put it another way Q4 2012 is nearly 3 years away. Consoles are maturing now, neither is capable of delivering a full HD experience (1080p 60FPS) and they are both gimped by 512mb of memory. PC tech is advancing as fast as ever (with the usual development ebb and flow (hello new Intel CPU range and Nvidia's Fermi GPU launching shortly), o.k. the pursuit of CPU speed hit a heat cap and instead switched to efficiency and parallel processing.
What has happened is that due to the cost of developing games the PC is no longer lead development machine and traditional PC gamers have to put up with compromised games that are designed for 512mb and limited graphical capability (bar a few highly specialist exceptions such as Arma II).
Don't get me wrong I am anticipating some amazing experiences with my PS3 this year but there is no way MS/Sony will wait another 5 years before launching a new console.

Well this is what Microsoft said.
Console owners have grown used to new machines coming along every five years or so, but according to recent comments by Microsoft, those days are over.
David Hufford, who is the senior director of Xbox product management, talked to the United Kingdom Guardian newspaper at the Consumer Electronics Show and said that “I think it's important to say that the Xbox 360 is the console of the long future for us. There is no need to launch a new console, because we're able to give this console new life either with software upgrades or hardware upgrades like Project Natal.”
The Microsoft man believes that “the midpoint” has not yet been reached although he would not venture a number of years for which the Xbox 360 is expected to stay on the market.
I cant see Sony being any different, i still think the ps3 has loads and loads of potential yet

seriously we are in 2010 now so 2012 is less than 2 years away (a week over 23 months do the maths). as for the ever advancing PC tech Fermi has been delayed 3 times now due to not being able to get yields up to consumer supply of such advanced GPU`s so PC tech is starting to show slowdown due to developing too fast especially with parallel processing and anvanced 3d processing.
we all know the 360 and PS 3 are as you say "gimped" memory wise but they both perform on par with moderate gaming rigs graphics wise (notice i didnt say performance) at 720p which is the hd ready standard than the majority of all HD tv owners have.
you hit the nail on the head thermal limitation is an even bigger issue for home consoles. the cases we have for consoles are confined to say the least and heat is a big issue. we have already seen MS have issues cooling the 360 and the PS3 launch consoles are a little frigile proving there is too much power in there for the size of space for cooling.
Consoles always fall behind during their lifetime but the PS3 and 360 had such great techonlogy to start with that developers are finding ways to keep improving visuals and give better performance. these coding advancements are enough to offset the need for a new console for a good few years yet. its about time we all got out of this idea of a new console "every 5 years" and it makes sense with the PS3 and 360 especially as both are capable of performing well giving awesome graphics at 720p even if the performance is cut to 30FPS its not the end of the world.
