I don't get why Apple didn't stick an i3 or an i5 in the new Air's, seems an odd choice to put a C2D in it, then again Apple are always sort of behind the times processor wise.

Re: to all thoses that have an apple mac

I don't see the point, as I wouldn't be able to use any of he software I want on a mac, and would end up booting windows on it.  May as well get a decent PC instead (as for the money, you get so much more).

all Apple products seem to be all status-symbol and hype and short on everything else.

They are, but this time it makes sense.

The i3, i5 and i7 mobile chipset sizes are all quite a bit bigger than the Core 2 Duo sizes, and Apple don't like shipping these so called "higher end" machines without a dedicated GPU. So either they could ship it with a newer processor like an i3, but would be stuck to only having the on-chip GPU that come with them CPUs, and that isn't great.

I won't defend Apple's hardware (specification wise) much, but this time, I can see their reasoning. I'd rather have a capable CPU and GPU than just a capable CPU :smileytongue:

As for the topic, I have a 15" Macbook Pro i7, and it is great. Of course, the specifications don't justify the price, but the software does. My much, much more capable PC isn't as nice to use as the less capable Macbook Pro, and I put that down to the software.

Re: to all thoses that have an apple mac

The C2D's are smaller than the i3/i5? I would've thought they'd have been smaller =S

Re: to all thoses that have an apple mac

Well the die size themselves are similar, and I think even the same size, it is the bigger packaging and chipset that make the difference. They've had years of revisions, so it isn't really surprising.

Re: to all thoses that have an apple mac

I got my Macbook from Amazon for £780 which is cheaper than Apple's education store or a refurbished model.

The reason why Apple has stuck with the Core 2 Duo is that they can use motherboards with on-board nVidia CPUs. nVidia and Intel are current involved in legal arguments over chipsets and there aren't any nVidia motherboards that support the i3, i5 and i7 CPUs as a result. All the Apple machines based on i3, i5 and i7 CPUs have ATi graphics.

Re: to all thoses that have an apple mac

Uhm, my Macbook Pro i7 has a NVIDIA 330M GPU.

That isn't the problem. Apple wouldn't use NVIDIAs dreadful motherboards anyway.
