with this past month or two seeing the announcement of all the various winners or gaming awards, it got me thinking...... Who out there looks at awards and picks up a game based on the fact that it won one? Personally speaking I do like to know who won what at these award ceremonies, but i certainly don't base my gaming decisions on them.
(this sprung to mind largely because Skyrim has been cleaning up at awards ceremonies of late (and is probably gonna win the bafta awards as well), and whilst in my opinion its deserving, i wonder what effect the awards its winning will have on its sales (not that it needs to worry to much... not many games can claim to have dethroned call of duty at xmas time, but skyrim is one of 'em!!

I believe games reach a significant percentage of their lifetime sales in their first few months so it's unlikely awards generate too much of a spike since they're often given long after release, with the possible exception of the E3 critics awards.

Games get awards for its content rather than sales. But if sales reach above estimation mark then it will be noted for surpassing sales. The VGA gets announced after the games have been released, so I don't think it could boost sales or persuade buyers and Sometimes the VGAs got it spot on; whilst other times they would get it wrong. So I'd just buy the game that is interesting and engaging to me rather than buying something that VGA offered me, that I might not like.
In terms of Skyrim. It could've easily be the fasted and best selling video game of all time, if it weren't for the bugs stopping people buying it. Some people were saying they would wait for the patch to clean up the mess and others have handed back their game or not bought Skyrim cos' they were devastated by the mess; so now they wouldn't buy a Bethesda game. I said this too often, but my brother got Skyrim but then handed it back to the shop because of various glitches and freezing problems. He didn't buy it again and neither did I (I've never played it). But you see the impact... consumer awareness has on people. Last year (2011) I would've given game of the year to L.A. Noire cos' of the facial capture, illumination tech and good story plot. The over-hyped games of last year, fell in the toilet, thus including: Uncharted 3; for having the same template as Uncharted 2; causing it to be repetative at times. Saints Row 3; for being glitchy, buggy (Don't know what I'm on about... try flying a private jet and landing it without crashing) and for having a rubbish story cos' the main bad guy died at the beginning.
Everyone has their own game of the year, so don't listen to VGA, baftas, golden globes, NTA, Brit Awards,
That's just there for the artists.

^^ both your opinions make perfect sense to me, i mean i have never bought a game based on awards, in fact i only look at the awards because its intriguing to know what won and if i agree based on my own experiences with the game.
I do appreciate awards that are voted for by us, the general public, and if a game wins such an award and i don't currently own it, i certainly might give it a try. But i would never trust a game that wins a vote based on some kind of critics panel or something similar.
By the way... Skyrim has just had a big patch and it has REALLY improved the game. Lag is non existent for me now and i haven't encountered any new glitches as yet, so it is potentially worth picking up if your willing to give it another try.

i vote for gta sa
right.... just to check you do know this is a PLAYSTATION forum and not a gta forum?!?! Its getting really annoying with you hi jacking threads and posting 1 liner rubbish about gta... there was no need to say what you said, as this was clearly not a vote for your favorite game thread.
Do not for one second think that posting in the way you are currently makes you popular.. if anything it makes you unpopular. What will increase your popularity here is to post contructively and join in conversations----- not continue your fanboy threads.
