We recently got our SD update but no HD as HD is not free in this country as of yet. But the aussies are getting it pretty soon aswell. $200 to them and they can own a HD PVR but sony where are our HD versions? anytime soon, i hope.

I doubt it will be soon.

Aus uses the DVB-T standard for HD broadcasts which is natively supported by the PTV Box.

The UK (cos we like to be different) uses (or will use) the DVB-T2 standard which is not supported by the PTV box.  TBH, I can't see how they will make the existing units compatible.  Perhaps we'll have to buy bew hardware.

We will need new hardware it is not possible for our Play TV tuners to receive and transmit HD picture - fact.

I am sure if we had freeview HD in this country sony would release a hd play tv adapter, But we dont, so what would be the point of sony releasing one ? it would just sit there recieving nothing ! I am sure when the digital switchover is compleat and they have sorted out some sort of freeview HD sony will be on the job.

They say it can be done through an update but then it wouldnt be native, it would just be upscaled. Yes we would need to buy a new piece of hardware i suppose but then again i doubt we will see free HD freeview here in the uk for atleast another 5 - 10 years lol

BBC Freeview HD will be up for The World cup in 2010, if the BBC have their way. The other channels wont rush any thing as the last UK freeview HD area wont go HD till 2012. You can expect to pay over the top price for the BBC freeview HD Box, if you are in one of the first areas in November to get BBC Freeview HD
The DVB-T tuners in PLAY TV are HARDWARE not software. .

PLAY TV has not been released in AU, they are early importers only as it still has to many problems for a full PAL release.
It won't record H264 buy the EPG yet. Has problems with DD5.1 audio.

We already have freeview HD - it is on Freesat you get the following channels on freesat BBC HD, ITV HD - from what I have read Channel 4 HD is due during the autumn with others to follow.  Unfortunatley it is sattelite based not ariel based which counts Playtv out of being upgraded.  But i would not be suprised if a dvb-s card is somewhere in the pipeline.

I believe there will be a ariel based hd channel but it will only came when there is enogh bandwidth available - which unfortunatley is when 90% of switchover is complete
