Re: PS3 play a film in mp4?

Actually, MP4 is just a container, which the PS3 supports. What it really depends on is the compression method, bitrate and audio. Some MP4s play, some others dont. I guess there's a webpage somewhere saying what will and won't play.

However, when people say MP4, they generally mean H.264 codec aka AVC, which should work.

Re: PS3 play a film in mp4?

PS3 cannot play any knids of MP4 files. PS3 can play MP4 video files with extension of .mp4 with video codec of MPEG-4 AVC H.264 /Xvid/DivX and audio codec of AAC. There are still some other MP4 video files are unsupported like MPEG-4 ASP.

As MPEG-4 AVC H.264 codec, support is limited to the following specifications:

AVC Profile: Baseline, Main or High Profiles
Maximum bitrate: None specified. However, if bitrate is above 20Mbps, stuttering will occur when playback
AVC Level: 4.2
No B-Pyramid and P4x4 support
4GB limit for streaming H.264 files

To successful play MP4 files that PS3 failed to see/recognize, transfer, playback or not normally playback, a better solution is to convert MP4 to PS3 supported MPEG-4 AVC codec or MPEG-2 video

Here is the detailed guide on how to successfully play various kinds of MP4 on PS3:

This post is So out of date.. red text contains corrections
AVC Profile: Baseline, Main or High Profiles

Maximum bitrate: None specified.

However, if bitrate is above 20Mbps, stuttering will occur when playback. wrong only if you are on Wifi G will you likely get that as your wifi starts to fail.  Files with bit rate of over 150Mb/s have been played of the HDD and BD and Wifi N Media servers.
AVC Level: 4.2, Again still way out of date Level 5.1 support and 3D have been added.
No B-Pyramid and P4x4 support,

P4x4 is normal profile. high profile requires P8X8 both have been supported from day one.
4GB limit for streaming H.264 files.

Again wrong 64bit MP4 along with level 5.1 and High profile and Hard wired media server NAS usage. will stream unlimited lengh files from EX4 and HTFS and NTFS servers. a Fat32 server its self has a file size limit not the PS3. streaming 16GB M4V files is a very common usage.

If your going to necro a Post from 3 years ago get the correct info.

The only thing you got right was that, MPEG-ASP can't be run out of MP4 container becuase their developers built and licensed the codec to another container called DIVX or on PC the old extension AVI is still used, which does Run on PS3 as well as DRM'ed DIVX as SCE got the license from DivX.
