I'd like to try the 180 day trial, but everytime I try to connect, I get told I cannot connect/service is unavailable, and have to quit the app.

Everything else works on PSN/Store/Home/games etc....

If you look at this link it should help.

1. Go to Account Management on the XMB(XrossMediaBar).
2. Select Transaction Management
3. Select Require Password at Checkout
4. Confirm that the ‘Require Password at Checkout’ is set to off

...and for my next question - if I added this on the PS3, is it music only?  Or do films appear somewhere?

(edit : I presume it's music only on PS3 then...?)

Qriocity Is just the posh name for PSN servers via non gaming equipement.

The service your paying for is called Music unlimited.  

So yes its just a Music subscriber service.

The PS3 store Supplies Movies in the Same countries as Qriocity does. (Like a 1 shot licensing deal )

If you havent seen the movie store then its likely not available in your country.

The PS3 uses a Download option as it has a perminant HDD unlike HDTV or BD players instead of streaming but if you use the watch while download option it becomes the same as streaming. (This means the house hold can view multi times with in 48hrs) 

But for HD streaming you need a low traffic connection over the internet back bone.

I can max out my 10Mb/s connection on SD streaming so dont have buffer problems.

Lots of users can't.  

Try the free featurettes as downloads first.

The prices are FIXED buy the movie companies due to deals with Other suppliers. 

The service has an IP filter you can't use a PS3 out side the country of the account your using . PS3 are not mobile devices unlike PSP, so the region free does not apply.
