Does the PS3 recognise standard CDs, or PSX format discs?
If not, then it's pointing towards a red laser failure in your drive.

The only other suggestion at present is... Is the DVD surface free from smudges? I had an issue with a rental DVD giving a black screen. Turned out to be a mark on the surface. Not a huge one, but it must have been in exactly the wrong place. Either that or the PS3's drive is less tolerant to muck on discs than some  dedicated units.

Re: cant play dvds

goto display settings and make sure (if you have 1080p) the resolutions are all checked the goto the settings which has all the blu ray/dvd settingsin there and make sure all the dvd settings are set to upscaled.

If i had use of the tv i would be alot more presise but alas eastenders is on at the moment.

Re: cant play dvds

The blu ray drive in the ps3 is very tolerant to muck on the discs.

i done a mini experiment and my dvd player upstairs wont read some discs but the ps3 will.

Perhaps in my case, like I supposed, the mark was in exactly the wrong place. Granted, I rarely have playback issues.
