Hi, i was playing fifa 12 a couple weeks ago and was on the main menu when the screen went blank, i heard 3 short beeps then the ps3 started blinking red then turned to solid red. i walked towards the ps3 and turned on the power button on the front and it started up with a message saying i didnt turn of the console properly and it then checked if the ps3 had corrupted data which it didnt.
This happened 2 more times before i decided to see a ps3 repair professional (same guy who reballed my ps3 a month or so back), and he said it was just a hard drive error and recommended to back up all my stuff.
I turned it on after getting it back from the guy today and signed into psn and was on the xmb when the ps3 was all glitchy when scrolling down on the game data menu and then it beeped 3 times, started blinking red then turned off and this time, continued to blink red and didnt turn solid red.
Does anyone have any idea on what they think I should do as I'm really looking forward to playing fifa 13 in 2 weeks and would like the ps3 to be sorted by then. ![]()

What you have described is a ps3 overheating problem. It has nothing at all to do with the hard drive. This is the most common common fault for the 60gb ps3. If your repair guy new anything about ps3 he would have known this please don't use him again.
First when you turn your ps3 on does the fan go very loud or stay quiet? If it's quiet this suggests the fan has gone faulty. Most likely your fan will be very loud when your ps3 is running. My one used to sound like a jet was about to take off. This can be very easily fixed and requires very little technical knowledge is required. Have a look for gilksy ps3 repair guide or ylod repair on google this guy will explain everything step by step. You can ignore the part to do with reflowing that's not relevant to your situation but follow the rest. Takes roughly 30 - 60 mins but if you don't fancy that give Sony a call.
Congrats on keeping a 60gb alive this long there a rare breed nowadays.

That's a PS3 on its way to never turning back on again.
My advice is to back up your data and trade it in at GAME while its still "operational", better they get it then you try and sell it on eBay (and the buyer wants his money back after 2 days).
GAME will give whoever buys it 12 months warranty and its bound to break so the customer gets his money back and GAME send it to TCR to get it fixed. Everyone wins. ![]()

Just turned on the ps3 now to check the loudness of the fan and the ps3 got the YLOD for the second time. Do you think the ps3 is suffering from the classic YLOD problems or from another fault? Is there any way of checking what it could be, as I don't trust this repair guy now!
If I were to trade in at Game what sort of condition would it have to be in and what price am I likely to get?
Thanks

Hey,
Could you describe what sort of condition it would have to be in to be accepted as a trade in at Game? A trade in that would get a reasoneable trade in price that is..
Thanks

If you got a red light it will be a simple case of just replacing the thermal paste and clearing the dust from inside. If it was a yellow light you'd have to follow the guide i gave above. The 60gb ps3 has a design flaw that means this will happen to all 60gb ps's at some point. There are no cures for this problem only temporary fixes. Most people just buy a slim after they have reflowed a few times as it starts to become an annoyance more than anything. Not sure what game look for in consoles but usually the warranty sticker has to be intact. This kind of tells them you haven't been inside the console and that it's not likely to break soon. You may get lucky and they might not check. A guess at what you would get would be between £60 -80 you may get a bit more or a bit less.
Good luck.
