Blu-ray playback problems

[ Edited ]

Hello, I've found a specific issues with some blu ray discs. I own a slim ps3 160gb. approx 9 months old. Most of my discs are perfect in playback. But recently I picked up a sealed brand new copy of Underworld, the film plays the opening this is a retail only copy text the distributors logo. Just as the menu is about to play the display cuts out, the ps3 keeps the green light on but in effect lay shuts down. I cannot get back to the main menus. Only by restarting will I get back to using the ps3. Thinking this was the odd disc and a sucker for the Underworld films, I picked up the new Underworld quadrilogy. Purchased rom different retails and some time apart. But both exit the same effects. Also the ps3 menus only show the bluray as being BDMC and not the normal film icon. In fact in testing only the most recent Underworld Awakening works fine from the box set. I've never had this effect before, and no errors show on screen. However I can't test The discs on another player. Anyone have any ideas?. Thanks.

Re: Blu-ray playback.

Check that the movie has Region "2" "B" or EU written on it. If the region is wrong or it says US then the disk will not run on your PS3 system.

I did some googling and it seem some discs freeze when connecting to BD-Live.

If you go to the Settings on the PS3 menu and go to "Video Setting" then set "BD Internet Connection" to "Confirm".

Now try the disc again and if it ask to connect to the internet say no.

If that doesn't work you'll need to disconect your PS3 from the internet (remove cable/remove Wi-Fi settings) and try again.

Re: Blu-ray playback.

Can i jump on this thread ?... just that i have heard that theres (supposedly) a big quality difference between using the ps3s bd and using a .. erm, real bd player.. some mini debate i seen a while back, also it has something to do with the enrgy/power that the seperate players either use or consume while playing bd's, at the time i wasn't too bothered as i thought (think) that the picture looks well ok, on ps3 etc, now though i am having some thoughts over it... wish i could find the forum/post i read... anyway, does anyone know what these (if any) differences of quality are.. and if it is the same deal for 3d playback.. ie, should i consider adding a dedicated bd/3d player, or are any differences going to be minimal. appreciate if i can get any info.. thnx.

Re: Blu-ray playback.

I've seen some other posts about the bd live needing to be switched off, but the disc does not appear to have any bd live features (nothing on back of package), perhaps made before that feature? I've tweaked every setting and even reformatted the had on the ps3, unplugged and have for,ware 4.11. Nothing is working on either discs. I was hoping to avoid the trek back to the shop, but looks like I'll have to. I hope I can try the discs on another ps3/ bdray player I the shop, but just weird fault, and can't see it being the physical disc.

@Chrisandsheva (sorry i can't seem to qoute)

I don't think there will be a vast amount of difference between a full BD player and the ps3, but you have to keep in mind that the ps3's blu-ray player is from the mid 2000's and so compared to players now it may not perform as well.

Re: Blu-ray playback.

So, I think I be solved my problem. I. Was playing around with ps3 and reset everything, then set the Display Output to use hdmi and only 720p. The affected discs worked fine. Played movie. Menus and special features. Tweaking it appears I can only play the first three underworld films when limited the hdmi Display Output to 1080i and not 1080p. For some reason it will not play the menus/ films at 1080p. I have don't know if this will cause a problem later on with some other discs, but at least the issue is overcome to an extent. Thanks for popping suggestions over.
