Data Restoration Help

I've recently been through the hell that is replacing my hard drive. It took me a while to get my External hard drive to comply to the PS3's FAT 32 requirement. I backed up the 160GB of things on my hard drive and after 9 gruelling hours emerged victorious on the other side. Now I've replaced the hard drive and after trying to restore it has gotten stuck at 72%. Prior to the percentage freeze It was going up a couple of percent every 5 minutes, should I leave it on overnight to see if it finishes or should I cancel and restart? Am I doing anything wrong?

Re: Data Restoration Help

A speedy reply would be helpful as I have to decide whether to restart it or not now.

Re: Data Restoration Help

Cancel and reboot/restart. Have heard of this happening before and it turned out to be the FAT32 format method at fault. How did you format your data drive?

Re: Data Restoration Help

Having attempted to restore data on more than half a dozen occasions on 3 separate PS3 consoles, I have come to the conclusion that the "Restore Data" function is useless on anything other than virtually a brand new console with very little saved to it.

The backup function always completes successfully (even after 16hours), however if your PS3 had any protected data such as any locked gamesaves on it then I'm afraid its a lottery whether anything will restore at all. The best that I have been able to restore is some game save data for some of the accounts on the PS3, and none of the Game installation data or DLC will restore at all. This is usually not much of a problem for newish consoles, but after installing over 200 games it will take months to re-download your game-update data and DLC.

Best option in my opinion to save you all of that wasted backup time, is to just save whatever unlocked gamesaves you have to either USB sticks or the PSN-cloud (Plus) for each account. Restore this data once new console or else new Hard drive is replaced and start again for the rest. Fewer headaches and heartaches that way, and like me you can stay away from companies who insist on locking their gamesave data with proprietary code which makes the PS3 Restore function fail.

Re: Data Restoration Help

Running rebuild database and Restore PS3 System from safe mode can resolve the problem sometimes. Though if it just won't work, transferring music, movies and pictures via USB. Then saves can either go to USB or PS+.
If you have Plus, you can insert each disk and run it, and run each application after its initial download. Then the automatic update process will bring it all up to date when you aren't using it :smileyhappy:

Re: Data Restoration Help

Try taking the drive out and formatting it using a PC. Then put it back in the PS3 and try again :smileyhappy:

Re: Data Restoration Help

If the PS3 is unable to start in safe mode, then it can't do anything by itself. You'll need a PC to help you.

Here's a guide on how to remove it, though you'll either need to open up your PC if it's compatible, or put it in an enclosure in order to use it.
