Display issue (using AV Cables)

Hi,

I purchased a new ps3 160g machine yesterday.  I am away at work so just hooked it up to an old 32' Panasonic non HD tv.  Tv probly 15 years old.

I hooked it up using the suppled AV cables.

The display and picture is fine if I watch a blu ray or net flix or something like.  It even looks fine during cinematic sequences of games.  However when in an actual game the graphics are horrible.  I mean I cant even read the writing on the screen when I try play Magic2012.  It almost reminds me of trying to play a game on a PC that doesnt have video card drivers installed.

I guess my question is should it be like this with such an old tv?  Is something wrong with my settings (listed below)?  Is there something wrong with the PS3 I wont be able to try it out on a regular tv for a month or so.

Settings are:

Game Settings;

PS Upscaler - Off

PS Smoothing - Off

Display Settings;

Video Output - Current Output Resolution: 480i

    Component / D - Terminal

     Standard(NTSC)

      4:3

Cross Color Reduction Filter - On

RGB Full Range - limited

Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super White - Off

Deep color Output - Off

Anyways if anyone has any ideas what could be wrong let me know.  Might just be the TV is that bad.  I guess I just want to make sure nothing is wrong with the machine.  But like I said I cant even read writing inside the game.

P.S. hope I dont sound to stupid, I am technically illiterate.

Thanks in advance

Re: Display issue (using AV Cables)

If you're using an old crappy tv, then yes. The picture is really that bad. In order to get the best out the PS3 you really need a HDMI cable, otherwise tiny flickering text and poor unrealistic picture is the best you'll get.

Widescreen TV's make it more bearable, though they don't match the HDTVs. Most of these settings have no effect unless stated. If it says anything about those connections, then try fiddling with it and see if it makes things any better.

Re: Display issue (using AV Cables)

I would change the Component/ D terminal setting to AV MULTI/SCART then the next screen chose RGB then the other settings to PAL or NTSC depends on tv/region.

When i was originally using an SD tv set i was using a true RGB 21 pin SCART cable the supplied one's are pretty poor.

The above cable in the link or something similar will improve text more than the supplied cables i still use one today with the trusty old PS2.

Re: Display issue (using AV Cables)

The old PS2 cables are marginally better quality than the PS3 ones, you may notice a slight improvement with them too. (though it may make no difference)
