One thing worth checking is your router up-to-date with the latest firmware? 

Reason i ask i had problems with my netgear even with DMZ set-up it was not forwarding packets correctly to some games. 

After using some DSL setting work arounds to get some games working a recently released update has resolved all problems no work arounds needed.

I managed to download COD4, tried various times yesterday and this morning, when I went to work I left it on "turn PS3 off after downloading" and just got home to see it had installed

Could this be doing it? Only started April 30th.

Try clearing the log, then attempt to run the update straight away. See if any errors pop up.

I cleared the log and downloaded a game that always fails, Max Payne PS2 classic it failed and no new errors at all.

I'd say the error log probably isn't related, and might just be general notifications the router logs for no reason in particular.

The error logs first error appeared on the day I bought Modnation and couldn't install the update Coincidence?

The error logs may only be kept for a certain length of time, or a certain number of errors may be kept.

UPDATE:

I have a tech dude from my ISP coming round today as there are no problems in my area. Bet he won't find a problem though as they never seem to do, just hope he replaces my router at least
