[Whizzer-Hawk]

I was playing a PS2 game on my PS3 and it just immediately froze the game, beeped 3 times and shut itself off. After it did that it had a flashing red light and I decided to leave it alone for about 10 minutes, of which I still saw the flashing red light.

I turned the PS3 back on again and it started up like nothing had happened...? I haven't touched it since that happened about 20-30mins ago and I've just left it on the XMB.

Edit: The console gave no indication of the 'yellow light'... it was just red.

This sounds like a self defence thing so make sure your PS3 is not overheating. That would be the first step =_

That was my first concern. Although the temperature of the console was quite adaquate to me.

If the PS3 is turning off like that less than 10 seconds after turning on then that would point to a serious internal failure. Unfortunately that is pretty generic and is really an "I don't have a clue" message from the console.

The best thing to do in this case would be to see of you can get it repaired. Sony could replace it for £150 or another store may take it for a (possibly short term) fix for anything up to £60

It might have just been the heatsink; the console was probably telling me it was getting too hot. I did have it on for awhile playing a game when it happened.

That's the only thing I could think of that would have caused it. If it was just a typical game crash then it would not have turned itself off.

Ah. I misread. I thought you said it wasn't coming back on.

If its just once and it's fine now then you're probably fine. Normally the PS3 will display an on screen alert if it gets too hot.

No on screen alerts, nothing. It was like the PS3 acted like nothing had happened - it started up normally.
