I want to upgrade the HDD on my 7 month old PS3 Slim 320GB because I'm quickly running out of space, but I don't want to invalidate the warranty. People keep telling me that it won't be invalidated. "Just put the old HDD back in if you need to return it to Sony", but I'm looking for some place where Sony says this rather than an end user. Thanks.

I'm just reluctant to go ahead until it's 12 months old unless I can find a Sony webpage, or representative, explicitly stating that upgrading the HDD won't void the warranty.
Maybe I should give them a ring tomorrow.

I've just called Sony Cusomer Service and they told me the warranty is void if I replace the HDD.
I've read the instructions in the official guide, but it says nothing about the warranty.

"Upgrading the HDD will not void the warranty, however, the consumer takes full responsibility when upgrading the HDD."
I'm ringing back to complain about this.
Edited to add:
Here is the same statement on the PS3 UK website FAQ:
Thanks for the responses, they inadvertently led to this. I just wasn't prepared to infer from instructions in the official manual that the warranty wouldn't be voided, but that's irrelevant now I found the above links.
/currently waiting for Sony to answer the phone. I'm guessing a got an inexperienced rep when speaking with them earlier.

Yep, I beat you to posting the link, but you shouldn't infer things about the warranty because instructions are given in the official manual. Always look for an explicit statement.
Back in 2003 when Toshiba notebooks came with paper manuals, they gave all kinds of howto instructions about hardware upgrades but mentioned nothing about the warranty. However, it transpired that if anybody but a Toshiba Authorised Service Provider performed the upgrades, the warranty was void.
That's why I don't infer things about warranties from instructions.
Thanks again though, anyway. Problem solved.
/still waiting for Sony to answer the phone. lol.
ETA: I'm editing again to avoid needlessly bumping the thread to the top of the list. I spoke to somebody else at Sony and he apologised and said upgrading the HDD won't void the warranty, but of course, the new HDD won't be covered by their warranty. So yeah, I guess you just stick the old one back in if it must be returned.
