PlayStation®3 Technical Help

I currently reside in the United Arab Emirates and own an XBox 360 but when I play on Live, my conncection is great with people that reside around me.  Problem is, if I try to play a game with my friends back in the state, the connection suffers terribly.

I am thinking that maybe I should purchase a PS3 and try the Playstation Network but was hoping that someone could give me some insight on the connection that they are able to get in a remote area like this and connection with friends abroad.  I have strong internet and don't suffer when i play local people but have a terrible time with people in the states.  Any help or recent experience would be greatly appreciated.

Connection speeds vary greatly and can depend even simply on the game you play and the network map. There's too many factors to give an accurate picture I'm afraid, but if you try an online speedtest like speedtest.net and get consistently very high pings to the US then expect to have the same problem on PSN.
