My PS3 RIP?

My 3 yr old 80 Gig fat has stopped reading game discs. I can sign in to the xmb fine, I can still play games/demo's that have been downloaded from the store directly onto the hdd but when I try to play a game by inserting a disc I'm just gettin a black screen and a system freeze.

The PS3 is not running hot or loud, and all my discs are in mint condition I guess there's nothing I can do?

PS, if I get a new PS3 can I transfer my gamertag over to that and re-download any games, map-packs etc?

Re: My PS3 RIP?

Try going through the ps3 safe mode options.

And yes you can reactivate your PSN ID and redownload all your purchases if you get a new PS3 :smileywink:

You can find out about safe mode, the options and how to access it here: http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Technical-Help/Using-the-Safe-Mode-function-on-...

I'd advise starting at the top and working your way to the bottom. :smileywink:

Re: My PS3 RIP?

Thanks for the help guys. I've been through all the safe mode options and it hasn't made any difference, looks like the disc drive has had it.

It's not worth repairing a fat 2 years out of warranty as something else could go wrong with it, so I'm getting a new 160 gig slim today.

Any idea if the fat is worth anything for it's parts?

Re: My PS3 RIP?

I am having the same problem, i updated my ps3 and then it wouldn't play games, plays dvds fine! At first i thought it was the laser so i bought a new blu ray player and still had the same problem so i searched the sony playstation forums to try and solve the problem. I did what most people recommened  i used the safe mode options to try and resolve it but to no avail. I have spent hours backing up my ps3 only to formatt it and still have the same problem?!?!?!

I stumbled across this post on the play station forum. We aren't the only ones having this problem :smileysad:

Here is the link i found, people are adding their names to the list :smileyhappy:

Re: My PS3 RIP?

You'd be as well selling it for parts. They may be able to fix someone else's PS3, though make sure you're very careful when handling and transporting them.
