New PS3 Console

Apologies if this is a stupid question (I am a little bit old!) but my son's 80GB PS3 is always saying there is not enough room for new games. He won't delete any of the downloaded games so the simplest way to solve the problem is to trade it in and buy one with a bigger hard drive.

My first question is how do I go about  transferring all his data, in particular his game save date.

My second question is am I correct in assuming that when he logs onto the network on his new console all his friend info and trophies will be there?

Again apologies for asking what might be obvious questions but a lot of what I can find goes through how to use the transfer data utility and that requires the two consoles at the same time.

Re: New PS3 Console

1 Pop a Usb memory stick in the usb slot.

2 Save data on that. (Some game saves are copyright and will not transfer)

3 Deactivate the account. (Found in Account Management  > System Activation)

4 Wipe hard drive of all data. (Found in System Settings > Restore PS3 System)

5 With new PS3 reactivate your account and all trophies/friends lists should pop up.

6 Any PSN games/patches will have to be redownloaded.

7 Pop in USB memory stick and transfer game saves etc.

[Or you could just buy a bigger hard drive for the old system.  Personally I would go with the Slim]

You can just upgrade the hard disk. You will need an external usb drive (anything over 80Gb wil do for you), backup your system, install a new drive and then restore to the new drive. This will be cheaper than buying a new system. Play.com and Amazon do PS3 compatible drives - I just bought a1TB for just over 70 pounds If you choose this route, you can find the full details on what you need to do on the playstation website (or threads in this forum) It probably wouldn't take more than a couple of hours to do the whole thing.

Re: New PS3 Console

Thanks very much for the replies. The saving old stuff went fine (except his WWE which seem to be protected) so all we need now is a new console!

Re: New PS3 Console

Upgrading the hard disc is usually cheaper and allows much greater capacity drives. As you have it all backed up all you would need to do is buy a 500GB hard drive and you're getting more for your money :smileywink:

Just make sure it's a 2.5 inch, 5400rpm SATA2 Hard Disk drive. Replacing it won't invalidate the warranty and only takes 5 minutes. It requires a screwdriver and has loads of guides online.
