You don't need to do anything on the controllers 
From the standby (red light) mode of the PS3, hold the power button until it beeps once After the initial beep to turn it on. This should reset the display settings.
Also, if the PS3 won't turn off, try holding the power button for around 10 seconds and it should power off this way.
