I've just had an email saying my PS+ was automatically purchased and updated for another 90 days.
How can I get a refund for this? As when I get back from work later, I wanted to purchase the full year upgrade.

Don't think you'll get a refund. Sounds like you have auto-renew on.
You can still buy the years sub and it'll add to the 90 days you have now.
This is correct,
As auto renewal is on for the subscription as soon as Plus has expired it has renewed the 90 days. You can turn this off in the 'Services List' under 'Transaction Management' in Account Management on the XMB.
Otherwise you are able to purchase it at the reduced cost now if you wish and it will prolong Plus on the account.
