PS3 Broken? Possible fix?

Hello, let me begin by explaining my problem specifically

I've had a 240gb PS3 slim for about 2-3 years now, it's served me pretty flawlessly all this time and I've never had any real issues with it. Since i'm at uni I recently had a load of work to do and thought it would be best to disconnect it enitrely and avoid playing for a couple weeks. Today I hooked it back up to go and play for the first time in about 2-3 weeks (In other words, it was disconnected and turned off for 2-3weeks) and when I went to turn it on it didn't work.

What happens is: I go to turn it on, It starts for 2 seconds, There's a very brief yellow light then it beeps 3 times and goes to a flashing red light. I'm going to try and add a video I took to this post which illustrates exactly what happens.

Here's a video showing the issue

Naturally, I've googled this issue and researched the problem but a lot of the results are misguiding and in many respects different to my own, that is most people who get this YLOD (yellow light of death) have it on the old fat PS3 consoles, and beyond that they say that they were playing when their Ps3 crashed and the problem began. My situation is different because it's the PS3 slim, with which YLOD seems to be far less common and also it just started happening after a couple weeks of NOT using my PS3.

So I was hoping that somebody with a bit of knowledge could shed some light on what the problem is likely to be, why it started happening after not using my ps3 for a long time, and if at all, there is any fix I could try?

Thanks, BBB

Re: PS3 Broken? Possible fix?

The YLOD indicates a non specific hardware fault, and as far as i know the most common causes are a power supply fault or the cpu/gpu coming off the main board. This is due to the heat created when the PS3 is on, it melts the solder and connections are broken, and is less common on slim PS3's because they generate less heat. You can either send the PS3 off to be repaired or attempt to repair it yourself using one of the many guides out there, one method I can confirm that works is the oven bake method, but remember, these fixes are not permanent and are not guaranteed to work.

I hope this helps :smileyhappy:

Flashing Green, Yellow and Red:

When the power status light goes from green, to yellow then to a flashing red, it means that they may be an issue with an internal part with in the PS3 system. This may be caused by a variety of reasons and would need to be diagnosed by the support line.

When the PS3 power light flashes in this order, you can contact the PlayStation Support Line for further assistance. Sorry, it means the same on all PS3's by any cause.

(It's a bit like a generic "EVERYTHINGS BROKEN AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!! PANIC!!!" message from the PS3.)

Because it's not able to determine the problem, and the problem is preventing it booting, you'll probably not be able to resolve the issue yourself unless you're pretty highly skilled with computer hardware troubleshooting.
