PS3 Controller Help: Controller not charging

Hey guys, I've recently have had serious issues regarding the charging of my DualShock 3 controller.

I currently own two PlayStation 3 controllers:

One third party Power A controller (which came with its own charger) and the default DualShock 3 which came with my 160GB SOCOM 4 Bundle PS3.

The charger of my DualShock 3 currently suffered some irreparable damage, rendering it useless, and a while after, I used the third party charger and the DualShock controller began to charge just fine.

Either today or Saturday, the DualShock 3 stopped charging all together despite the fact that it has little battery left, but the third party Power A controller charges just fine, regardless of being hooked up to my PC or my PS3.

I've begun searching for different solutions, none of which have worked considering that I'm not sure if the same conditions applied to their problems apply to mine, though I doubt that's the case.

If anybody can regard help to the subject I'd be immensfully grateful due to being able to continue the great gaming experience Sony offers with the PS3.

Hi SuperCastleGhost,

If your Dual shock 3 is not charging, the first thing is to try a different USB cable to eliminate this as the issue. Also check if the controller charges on another device via this USB, so its not a USB related problem. There is also a pin sized reset button on the back of the controller you can try.

I would intially leave the conroller plugged in for a period to check the battery is not entirely dead (it may start charging after a short period) .

If all else fails it may indicate an issue with the battery.

Re: PS3 Controller Help: Controller not charging

Hey Rabid,

I've searched around my house for any compatible USB cables but I've found nothing.

As for any other USB device, I only have my PC's none of which seem to offer any energy supply to my controller when connected.

Yes, I know about the reset button, tried that over and over, and again, nothing useful.

Any USB to mini USB will work.  Also do you have a friend with a PS3 where you can try to charge your controller?

Re: PS3 Controller Help: Controller not charging

Searched everywhere around, nothing that fits the USB port on top of the controller.

I do have buddies but don't have their address and parents refuse to waste gas considering how our cars chug gasoline like an Irish man on St. Patrick's Day.

If nothing works then it's either to get another controller or a new charger, and I'd hate to waste money that can be used for better advances (car fuel, for example...) :Shame:

Re: PS3 Controller Help: Controller not charging

Ideally you want to try a different cable first then a different controller.  You can also try the other USB port on the console see if that makes a difference.

[ Edited ]

I've found a compatible cable but nothing different happens. The one which came with the third party controller is built specifically for the other PS3 controllers, 1st party or 3rd party, and it's only not working with the DualShock for the strangest of reasons.

I remember that once the lights went out while the DualShock controller was charging when my sister left her session unattended, and again for me once, you think that might be a contributing factor?

I'd theorize that it's the controller's battery itself that may be the problem.

The USB ports on the console work just the same, and they also handle flashdrives without a problem, so all that points to the controller itself as much as I'd hate to admit.

Never mind now, it's charging just fine, thanks to both of you for the suggestions and help :smileyvery-happy:

Re: PS3 Controller Help: Controller not charging

How did you resolve the issue. I am currently having the same problem. My controller just died and it will not turn on or take a charge. I have done all the ideas listed above. So again how did you fix it?
