My PS3 freezes every time i press the PS Button to send a message to someone or look at my friends list here's what it does:

It shows a loading button at the top left hand corner and after about 2-5 mins it'll let me send a message or view my friends list but sometimes when i back of it to carry on playing my game it'll do the same thing help please.

The in game XMB is slower than the regular one, though it shouldn't take that long to enter and exit. Try deleting excess messages in your inbox and outbox on the XMB as that wastes memory.

 Does this only occur in some games? If so, which ones?

does your ps3 freeze/loading for 2-5mins? and are you aware that you have to be in the xmb home top menu, close messages and message boxes before pressing the ps button to return to game.

I sometimes get long loading from game to xmb if the games loading especially if im in a lobby on network. Is it a problem for just one game or all games?
