PS3 Slim GPU issue?

[ Edited ]

Hi

Wondered if you could help.  I have had my PS3 (CECH-3003A) since January 2012 and only use it a few hours each week.  Just turned it on today and the screen started flickering as I was browsing the menus.  The flickers seemed to flash white/black blockyness across the bottom half of the screen.  after a few more mins the whole screen was doing it.  I tried restarting the machine and the same thing happened only more quickly this time.  I then left the machine off for 1/2 hr.  Upon trying again I was able to browse the menus etc until after about 4 mins slight flickering started building to full screen after a few more mins.

My console has got good clearance and is in a position on a shelf out of harms way from drinks etc.

I tried the composite output on my old telly but got nothing from the unit.

It would be my guess that the GPU is going wrong, possibly overheating?

Any thoughts -- Real shame as I was really starting to enjoy myself.

Re: PS3 Slim GPU issue?

I know this may sound obvious, but is it possibly your tv, also what output cable do you use, I ask because I use YpBpPr and sometimes when I turn my PS3 on my picture flickers and rolls, but removing the cable and plugging it back in fixes it, so try that :smileyhappy:

Re: PS3 Slim GPU issue?

Hi

Thanks very much for your reply.

I am using an HDMI cable direct to my HP HDMI monitor (HPW2207h). It has been working fine in this config since January and has just started going wrong. I have the unit on a shelf and don't move it around at all.  I don't think it is the monitor - I also use it with a PC and this provides a completely stable image.

I have just spent a bit more time fiddling with it.  The problem grows worse until there is some kind of automatic graphics only reset, the feed then comes back on, grows slowly worse again and seems to cycle in that way.

As there are a number of posts on here about changing from 1080p to 720 I have just given that a try as well and it does seem to provide a stable image. Given that it was previously working fine though it don't think this solves my problem.

Does anyone know what res MW3 displays in?  If i load this game (quickly before it gets too bad) I get a few flickers (in addition to the pretend ones from the game intro) but it seems to work ok.  Does it possibly run in 720?  Return to the main menu (which i guess goes back to 1080) and the problem is there so badly you can't see the options.

:-)

Re: PS3 Slim GPU issue?

MW3 will display in any (720, 1080i or 1080p) however if you have 720p ticked it will use that rather than 1080, do you use 1080i or 1080p?

Re: PS3 Slim GPU issue?

Hi

Thanks for coming back to me again.

My monitor supports 1080p and I have just left the ps3 on that setting believing it to the be the best choice.  It has worked fine for the 4 mnths i have had the system, up until now.

Did I say MW3 - sorry I meant BF3 - had a look around and cannot any settings for the output on this game.

Unfortunately my main issue remains the fuzzing out of the screen repeatedly as described in the 1080p mode - any other ideas?

regards

R

Re: PS3 Slim GPU issue?

Display Settings on the "Settings" column of the XMB will let you change it :smileywink: Try unchecking the 720p and 1080i boxes and see if it helps/

Re: PS3 Slim GPU issue?

Hi

Thanks again for your kind suggestions.

I have filmed the problem - at approx 20 to 30 sec you can see the problem starting.  The display res is set to 1080p at this point.

The clip is quite long as I just filmed it as I was trying out some of the earlier advice.

http://youtu.be/kzp0-J1ZPu0

Please don't watch it all - you might like to jump to around 12:30 as I close BF3 and return to the menu which is back in 1080p and the issue is now far worse.

---------------------------------

Forgive earlier qns as I am a noob when it comes to ps3.  Thank you for your pointer to the xmb settings menu.  I wasn't sure at the time whether that would have any effect on the in game res.  I now realise that it does.
I have also learnt that BF3 only plays at 720 hence no suprise that I am not having the problem while in the game (yet).  My system seems to remain stable at 720p

I did try, as suggested, unticking the other options however this didn't resolve the main issue.

As you can see from the uploaded video the artefacting gets slowly worse in 1080p until it becomes a major issue.  Prior to shooting the clip the system operated for 5 mins flawlessly at 1080p

Changing to 720p is a workaround but doesn't resolve the problem.

Any further ideas?  Does anyone know how I would send it back to Sony for looking at?

Thanks
R

Re: PS3 Slim GPU issue?

If possible, try a different HDMI cable and another Tv to see if either of those is at fault. If its the cable you simply need to replace it.

In the meantime, you could go back to the display menu and only enable 720p like you said. :smileyhappy:

Re: PS3 Slim GPU issue?

This may sound silly but try this.

Turn off EVERYTHING that is connected to the screen ( PC / PS3 ect ). Now unplug the whole screen from the mains. Remove ALL connections from the screen ( component cables / HDMI, ect )

Re-plug the screen into the mains and now turn on the screen with nothing connected to it ( should come on and turn off? onto standby)

Now if using a PC with the screen turn off the screen once more, connect the PC to the screen ( Turn on both PC and screen as normal ) the screen should now show the PC ( Leave this connected ) BUT now turn off the PC ( Both PC and screen will turn off back to standby )

Now connect the PS3 to the screen using the HDMI connection. Turn on the PS3 first and then the screen ( PS3 should find screen ). Now see if that helps?

Re: PS3 Slim GPU issue?

Could be a HDMI handshake issue OP.

Go into display settings and disable deep colour output.
