PS3 Slim - Power cutting out

Right, so the problem I have is that my PS3 is cutting out randomly. When it cuts out the red light is not on and I can only switch on my console once the power cable has been removed and put back in, then the red light reappears and I can switch on the console.

The power outages seem to be more random than anything and have only came about since I moved back home from University (I had my PS3 in this house previously with no problems). The fan seems to be running fine and I have not noticed the fan speeding up before any of the cutoffs, the console however does seem to heat up quickly and the vents are expelling alot of hot air but this has been common throughout the time I have had the console and no prior problems have existed.

I have always took care of my console, dusted it, cleaned the vents and made sure that it has a good amount of space so that it can stay cool but this problem seems to come out of blue. I have had no prior problems with my PS3 in the past.

So I am wondering is this a problem that can be fixed? is it a problem with the power cable? overheating? My console is coming up to three years old this Christmas so it is of course very much out of warranty.

Any advice or help would be very much appriciated.

Re: PS3 Slim - Power cutting out

I would suggest you try a different power cable as it could be this and it rules it out if it is not :smileyhappy:

Re: PS3 Slim - Power cutting out

Right changed the power cable and the problem is still occuring, so we can rule out faulty power cable.

Re: PS3 Slim - Power cutting out

Did you also try a different socket with the changed cable?

Re: PS3 Slim - Power cutting out

It is worth trying a different power socket and cable, particularly if this was not happening before on a different input. It is also worth checking you don't have power spikes, or any issues with other devices.

Also if possible do you have a surge protector you can try plugging it into while testing to see if this makes any difference.
