Re: PS3 data transfer utility from fat to slim NOT working

Ok, so after quite a few attempts, I got it to work. The key ingredient that I was missing was that I never signed in to my PSN on the new slim. Once I logged in using my existing PSN credentials, I attempgted to connec t the standard ethernet cable and voila, it is currently transferring my data!! Follow the steps on page 1 of this thread, as I did, and you'll be G2G!!!!

Re: PS3 data transfer utility from fat to slim NOT working

[ Edited ]

Thanks to this thread this worked for me.

50GB took about 60Minutes to transfer.
The end result a was perfect clone of the old Fat on a new Slim.
_
Fat PS3 console recovery
0. YLOD or RLOD
1. Use blow dryer method or pay 140 for a reflow to temporarily fix the PS3.
2. Sync Trophies
3. Backup Encrypted Games Saves to the PSN Plus Cloud.
_
Fat to Slim Data Transfer.
1. Make sure the New PS3 and Old PS3 are using the same Firmware.
2. New PS3 has been logged into PSN with old PS3 PSN account.
3. Deactivate the Old PS3 console Game and Video.
4. Disable Internet Connection and Media Server on both PS3's.
5. Connect the PS3's with a Cross over or Regular CAT5 cable.
6. Initiate Data Transfer From old Console.
7. Wait for transfer to Finish.
8. Login to PSN on New PS3.
Activate Games and Video and Sync Trophies if you have too.
I did not.
_
Notes:
*Delete all credit card records from your PSN account.
*Encrypted Game Saves Require 24 hour wait time before recovery from the PSN Cloud.
*A Data Transfer will copy some encrypted game saves.
*The Data Transfer Format will not delete the new PS3 user account created in step 2.
*Profile name(s) must be the same on both consoles, default is: User 1
*This method creates an exact clone of the PS3 system.
*The old FAT system cannot have an OtherOS installation on it.
In other words it must have been cleaned of any OtherOS install since 3.15
Even if you cant see or use it, if its taking up hard drive space the transfer will fail.

Re: PS3 data transfer utility from fat to slim NOT working

[ Edited ]

Hi all.

I have come across to the same problem today: PS3 data transfer from FAT 60GB to SLIM White 320 GB failed due to "Ethernet cable is not connected or PS3 is switched off" issue.

After a few failed retry attemtps to transfer data from FAT to Slim i searched for this thread and found it very useful.

Here is a sitrep: i got an old PS3 FAT 60GB bought at launch in 2007 and a new shiny white PS3 Slim 320 GB. Also i got an Ethernet cable i found in old ps3 FAT 60 GB package. This Ethernet cable (i guess it is straight-up, not cross over) was used for connection between router and my PC for years so i was sure it was operational.

After reading this thread i made a few changes and now my data transfer from FAT to Slim is almost complete (it's 73% as i read this message).

Here is list of my actions.

1) I deactivated all my accounts on the old FAT PS3 and activated them at new Slim via Internet (Used these already existing accounts in sign-up PS Network menu at Slim ps3).

Though i had a few friends profiles on my old FAT PS3 i could not delete them or transfer to my new Slim so i had to ignore the warning message about profile's deactivation before data transfer would began.

NOTE: I haven't activated PSN materials at my accounts on a NEW PS3 Slim before data transfer would began so i guess this action is not required for successful connection establishment between FAT and Slim via Ethernet cable.

2) Before beginning of data transfer  I have disabled Internet connection and a media server connection on both PS3's.

After that i launched data transfer. Source PS3 FAT was standby awaiting response from destination PS3 Slim. I switched channel on my TV to destination PS3 Slim and after a few minutes Ethernet connection was successfully established and Slim PS3 requested me to format it's hard drive to begin data transfer.

So i wish good luck all users experienced such annoying error. I guess the purchase of cross over Ethernet cable is not necessary for transfer.

This thread has really helped, thanks. Sony really need to put this in the tips section.

Re: PS3 data transfer utility from fat to slim NOT working

How long does the "please wait..." message normally take after you've connected them both up to eachother wired?

I don't get any error it just sits on "Please wait..." for ever, my old fat Ps3 had 300gb worth of data and the hard drive has been running slightly slower lately i think it's time is near.

But this won't work, tried more or less every solution I've read in this guide.

I got two questions that I'd like answered by people who have done this successfully and the answers could really help me.

1. If you have more then 1 account on your system (I got about 11) and you deactivate them all from your old Ps3 do you have to Create them all again, sign in and activate them all on your new system?

2. If you have games on your system with no owner because you've deleted the accounts that the games belonged to will that affect it and will it still copy them? Do you have to browse through your digital library and delete everything without ownership first?

Those two questions i haven't seen asked or answered on this thread so if you know the answer or can help please do!

Re: PS3 data transfer utility from fat to slim NOT working

I hold the world record for the longest time taken to transfer data!

I set it to transfer and it started working just before 3pm yesterday and it finally finished at 18:10 today!

Thats 29:10 hours!!

The estimated time went up and up, thought my Ps3's were dying and put them on the balcony outside so they wouldn't overheat lol.

In the end though i deactivated all accounts on the system both game and video and used a normal Ethernet wire.

Brought a 10mb Cross-over wire for no reason, does anyone know if a Cross-over wire can be used as a normal ethernet wire? Like can i stick it in the back of my ps3 and connect it to my router and play online normally without any faults?

Yikes! I thought my all-nighter took long time (just over eight hours). You "win". :smileyhappy:

An old el-cheapo switch I borrowed had a "auto detect cross-over cable"-sticker on it. I never did try it myself, but since then I have assumed it's a defacto-standard. This page would seem to concur.

You shouldn't get any "random/delayed errors" if your gear doesn't support it. Either it'll work, or it won't -- there's nothing in between. Just try it and see (you won't break anything).

Re: PS3 data transfer utility from fat to slim NOT working

What worked for me, was at the prompt on the source ps3 to connect a cable....that's when you connect the cable. Otherwise, they don't negotiate. Make sure you've started both ps3's without the cable connected. It was a regular ethernet patch cable, not a crossover.

Re: PS3 data transfer utility from fat to slim NOT working

had same trouble as many here, updating a 40GB fat PS3 to a brand new 320GB slim -- was getting the message that the cable wasnt connected when it was. Had tried 3 different cables to no avail.

Thanks to the posts here, was able to get it to work, finally (thanks guys), by doing the following, in this order:

1.  turned off both systems, disconnected the cable and turned both systems back on without the cable connected  (I am using a regular ethernet cable not a crossover)

2.   On my Fat source PS3, I Deactivated both Games and Video, then in Internet settings disabled the Internet Connection, then the Media Server

3.  On my Slim destination PS3, I Activated both Games and Video, then in Internet settings disabled the Internet Connection, then the Media Server

4.  I went through the normal steps on the fat source PS3, but waited to connect the cable until the screen told me to.

5.  Then did the normal steps for the slim destination PS3, it *finally* put me through to the screen that asked if it was ok to format the new PS3. Data transferred in less than 45 min.

THANKS AGAIN to all the help on this board.... and BOO to Sony for not updating their directions to reflect this obviously very common issue, for almost 2 years!!!
