Brought a 10mb Cross-over wire for no reason, does anyone know if a Cross-over wire can be used as a normal ethernet wire? Like can i stick it in the back of my ps3 and connect it to my router and play online normally without any faults?

Unfortunately you cannot use the crossover RJ45 cable to connect PS3 to the router. You can use it to connect two similar devices (PC - PC, Router - Router, etc.)

Re: PS3 data transfer utility from fat to slim NOT working

I've done the data transfer twice now, from 60 GB to 250 GB and then to 320 GB. Except for updating the system software, you don't have to do anything on the destination PS3 prior to the data transfer. Once you get the ethernet cable working, all you need is a lot of patience. This last time it took an estimated 17 hours!

Amazingly, to transfer my son's 80 GB on my 250 GB, it took just 1 try and about 2 hours.

Re: PS3 data transfer utility from fat to slim NOT working

I tried literally EVERYTHING mentioned in this forum and nothing worked. As soon as I was able to find a crossover cable ($15 at radio shack that i'll be taking back as soon as i'm done) the transfer started and worked the first time i tried!

A year and a half later still no mention of disabling internet connection. Thanks for the post.

Re: PS3 data transfer utility from fat to slim NOT working

I wanted to throw in my two cents. I had an original PS3 and I just got a new PS3 slim. Both are at software version 4.0. I tried the data transfer utility a couple of times, but it kept timing out. Out of frustration, I changed ethernet cables. That did the trick. Even as I type, it's transfering data behind me.

I did not use a cross over cable, just a regular ethernet cable. I was also not going though a switch, but directly connected the two systems to each other. It CAN be done, just try another cable and don't go through a switch.

Re: PS3 data transfer utility from fat to slim NOT working

I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with transfering data from a fat to a slim when multiple users use the same system. I share a fat ps3 with my sister, and i would like to transfer only my account (game saves and purchased downloads) to a new ps3 slim. I started to prepare my account for the transfer and the transfer utility displayed warnings that the other accounts (ones i do not want to transfer) were not prepared for the transfer. I assume that means the transfer utility feature is all-or-nothing. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Re: PS3 data transfer utility from fat to slim NOT working

Disabling Internet connection on the destination PS3 did it for me as well.
I've gone through the same problems as several people posted here: different Ethernet cables, following the manual's recommendations, etc... This did the trick right away.
Thank you for this thread and everybody's contributions.
I hope everybody with this problem finds this thread and reads it, all the help is here.
THANK YOU ALL FOR POSTING. And yes, it is crazy that Sony is not mentioning this in their manual as a step in the data transfer process.

Re: PS3 data transfer utility from fat to slim NOT working

I haven't read the full thread but...crossovercables...er no it doesn't work..it has to an ethernet cable directly connecting the two PS3's making sure that you set the IP Address to be on the same subnet...manually assigning IP's is far better for doing this...

The instructions does say a crossover cable but I could never get that to work...ethernet cable worked first time...
