PS3 froze on XMB and is now completely unresponsive

Hi,

My PS3 froze on the XMB and wouldn't respond to the PS remote or either of my controllers. I held down the power button on the front for a good minute solid and it wouldn't power down that way either.

I finally used the power switch on the back to kill it and left it off for about 10min before switching the power back on.

The red standby light came on and that is as far as I can get, I cant power on the PS by holding the power button on the front or by using the PS button on the controllers either unplugged or using the usb cable in either of the sockets.

There are no flashing lights, no noises, no nothing. The only thing that happens is that if I press the eject button I get the double beep telling me there is no disk in the drive.

I read in one of the forums to hold the power button down when the system is switched off to clear the motherboard or something but that hasn't made any difference.

Is there any help out there or am I just royally screwed?

Please use plain text.

Hi Izik,

It sounds like the console has developed an issue in this case.

Usually in the odd circumstance where the console is not responding when turned on, we advise to hold your finger on the power button until it powers down. However in this case it sounds like this did not work for you (cutting the power from the device can also cause issues as well).

Is the console not responding? and are you just stuck with the red light on the console now? If so then it would be a case of contacting support for assistance.

Let me know how you get on,

Rabid

That's a really really strange problem. Are you using a Slim PS3 (power button) or a fat one (touch button)?

only fat ps3's have the rear mounted power switch

I'm referring to the front panel where you turn it on. On a fat PS3 there is a flat touch sensitive panel, and on slim consoles there are two buttons.

Re: PS3 froze on XMB and is now completely unresponsive

Small miracle as its fixed itself :smileysurprised:

I was sitting on the couch and heard it power up by itself and when I turned the TV on I saw the PlayTV recording screen.

I left it to finish recording and power off again and when I pushed the PS button on the controller it woke up checked the HDD database, did a settings check and restore and now its working fine.

If I hadn't set PlayTV to record Star Trek I'd still have a dead PS3

Thats amazing, I've never heard of that happening before!

Indirectly we have Star Trek to thank for it now working

*Imagines Rabid suggesting watching Star Trek as a fix for a problem later and then seeing the baffled look of SFZ*

:smileyhappy: I did almost consider tagging it as a solution! There is clearly nothing Star Trek cannot fix!
