Re: Pairing Official and Unofficial Bluetooth headsets for the PlayStation 3

Before you can use a Bluetooth headset with your PlayStation 3 or similar device the headset must first be paired with the desired device.

You can pair the offcial headset in 2 ways:

Automatic mode (using the supplied USB cable) - Enables the headset's advanced features for the PS3.  Using automatic mode, you can pair the headset with any PS3, but only the most recently paired PS3 will be saved in the headset's list of paired devices.  You can find further information on the Advanced features HERE

Bluetooth discovery mode - Sets up the headset as a standard Bluetooth headset.  By using Bluetooth discovery mode you can pair the headset with many other Bluetooth devices.

Automatic mode:

Use the USB cable to pair the headset using the PS3 automatic mode.

Check that the PS3 is turned on.  Check that the PS3 system software is version 2.50 or later If you have an earlier version you must update the system software before you can use the automatic mode for pairing.

Insert the mini-B connector of the supplied USB cable directly into the USB connector on the headset.

Insert the other end into the USB connector on the PS3.

The power indicator on the headset lights up solid green for two seconds to indicate that the headset and the PS3 have been paired.

After registering the Bluetooth Headset, you will need to set the headset as the input / output device.  See instructions below

When you use automatic mode to pair the Bluetooth headset, HQ mode is initially turned on.

Bluetooth discovery mode:

Check that the PS3 is turned on.

Press and hold down the power button on the headset until the power and mic muting indicators flash alternately in green and red, indicating that the headset is in Bluetooth discovery mode.

In you PS3 home menu, go to Settings > Accessory Settings > Manage Bluetooth Devices

Select Yes to pair (register) the headset with the PS3.

Select Start Scanning The PS3 scans for the headset, and displays a list of all Bluetooth devices within range.

Select Wireless Headset When prompted for a pass key, enter 0000.

The headset is now paired with the PS3.  After registering the Bluetooth Headset, you will need to set the headset as the input / output device.  See instructions below

Setting the Bluetooth  headset as Imput/Output  Device

After the Bluetooth headset has been successfully registered (paired) with the PS3, you must set it as the default Input / Output Audio device before it can be used.

In the XMB home menu, go to Settings > Accessory Settings > Audio Device Settings and press the X button.
Highlight Input Device and press the X button. This is where you select the microphone for voice chat.

Scroll up and down until you find Wireless Headset and press the X button.

The [Output Device] will automatically change to match the selected Input Device  This setting will allow you to hear other players' voice chat message on the Bluetooth headset.  If you prefer to hear other player's chat messages on your television or on a connected receiver then you should adjust the Output Device to System Default Device

Be sure you have the Bluetooth headset turned on when choosing the input and output device.  If the Bluetooth device is off, the name of a that device will be "grayed-out" in Output Device and Input Device and you will not be able to choose it as an Input Device or an Output Device  If the Bluetooth device is turned on but the device name still appears “grayed-out” then you should connect the Wireless Headset.

Do this by highlighting Wireless Headset on the Input Device option and press the Triangle button, then select Connect.   This should light up the device name that’s displayed on your screen, allowing you to select it as Input Device and Output Device

Once the Input and Output Device have been selected, you can test the headset’s input/output levels by speaking into the microphone. You should be able to hear your voice over the selected Output Device and the sound indicator will go up.

If your voice is too soft, you can select Microphone Level and press the X button to adjust volume. When you are finished adjusting Audio Device Settings, you should select OK and press the X button to return to the XMB.

Pairing a 3rd party headset:

When pairing a 3rd party headset I would advise following the manufacturers instructions for the headset and use the same steps on your PlayStation 3 for the Bluetooth discovery mode.

Any questions please ask.
