Hi 

I have a problem with my PS3 which is apparently quite common I am getting sound but no picture, I have tried using HDMI and Scart connection to rule out the cable connections.

After looking online at common problems I have discovered that I need to re format/reboot my playstation through Safe mode.  I have followed the steps to put my PS3 into safe mode, but have encountered a problem accessing it.

I get as far as the instruction on screen that states "connect the controller using a USB cable, then press the PS button", and this is where the problem is I can not get either of my controllers to connect I have tried plugging both of my controllers into the PS via the USB cable and neither of them work, I know that they are connect as they both charge when plugged in.

Both my controllers are official PS ones, I have tried pressing the PS button and them plugging them in and I have also tried resetting both controllers using the reset button on the back of the pads, none of these have helped and I am now starting to get frustrated, I think I am left with only one option and that is to pay somebody to carry out what should be quite a simple task which as you can imagine is annoying.

Any suggestion would be gratefully received.

This sounds pretty peculiar. When resetting the controllers, did you put the PS3 in safe mode first, then put a pin in the back for 15-20 seconds?

I do not put the PS3 into safe mode it will not go past the connect controller bit I am basically stuck at the insert controller screen.

It will not acknowledge that the controller is there, but then if i start the PS in normal mode even though I do not get a picture, The controller will assign to the PS as normal, Just not when attempting safe mode. arrrrrrgh

Are you using the cables that came with the PS3/controller?

Had this problem myself a few months ago, turned out i was using a cable that came with a external HDD, looks the same but for whatever reason the PS3 or controller didn't work with it.

I am pretty sure that I am but to be sure I am going to borrow a cable and controller from a friend that has a reletiveley new PS. Thanks for the feedback will let you know how i get on
