Hi guys,

Today my PS3 has been showing some very strange behaviour. Some games have started to either not load, taking me to a blank screen (controller doesn't work at this point) or returns me to the main screen. All games are recognised by the PS3, but only some load & work.

It's not just discs either, several demos I have on the hard-drive do the same thing. Audio, Video & DVDs seem to work ok.

I'm very careful with my discs also. My newest game is FFXIII-2 which is only a couple of days old & that's one of the games that no longer loads, whereas GTA4 (had for about 3 years) works fine. I also installed a new blu-ray drive 6 months ago.

Any ideas? I assume it's time to replace, but any help/advice would be appreciated.

As it's affecting all media, I think it's possibly a corruption issue. Opening up Safe Mode and running "Rebuild Database" Should do the trick. If that's no use, "Restore File System" aught to help.

Thanks for the reply, no luck though. I tried both but the problem still persists. When I restored the file system, it did say that some data was corrupted & ran the restore, but it hasn't changed anything.

Would a system restore be likely to help? Or could it be a hardware issue?

There's a chance it could be a hardware issue, however it's best to eliminate software as the culprit first. The next step I'd suggest would really be to start at the top of the safe mode menu and work your way down. Obviously checking after each one. If you finish the bottom one and still have the problem, it's a good chance it's a hardware issue.

Tried it all, damn. Looks like it's going in the 'spares or repair' section of ebay! I saw a couple of forum posts on other websites with possibly the same problem; a couple of guys suggested it's a laser fault, but I would've thought that no games whatsoever would load in that case. Anyway, thanks for the help!

The PS3 has 2 lasers, one for BluRays and one for DVDs. When the BD one starts failing, it works patchily and frequently freezes, the freezes become more frequent and eventually it simply can't read the disk.

If that sounds like what's been happening to you, then you're probably right.

Hi everyone,

Recently when I tried playing Call of Duty: Black Ops the game began loading but stoped at a black screen. None of the usual start up cinematics ran, just the black screen, the controller couldn't do anything at this stage either.

As iI thought it may be the disc I got a new copy and the same problem appeared.

Any help/soutions would be appreciated!!!
