I have 3 PS3's in the house of which 2 updated no problems at all, whilst updating my PS3 the update went to 100% double beeped and then turned off, since then I am unable to start the system, power on 2 beeps and shuts down!!! Tried another hard drive which works fine, only 40GB.
The annoying thing is my now useless 500GB HD held all my game data etc, WHY HAS THE UPDATE BRICKED MY HD.
Spoke to technical support last night with no help, told me it was overheated, it wasn't only turned it on to do the update, told to turn off for 24hrs to see if that would sort it out, when questioned as to exactly what would that achieve no real answer, asked for 2 or 3 line to get back. Was informed it was nothing to do with the update, strangely all was working before the update, now its not!!! CMon Sony its not a coincidence that this happened, anyone got any real solutions, cannot even get into safe mode so not much help that way,

Hi jakepeg129,
It sounds like your console has developed a fault with the internal components. This is some times referred to as a yellow light of death.
There is nothing in the system software that would cause this, just as playing a disk will not break the Blu-Ray drive, however sometimes these 2 actions can coincide.
Unfortunately there is not a fix you can do at home so contacting PlayStation Support to arrange a replacement is your best option.

Wrong.
Any bios update that does not complete properly or has the power pulled while updating can be catastrophic to any system having an update. Stop telling porkies that a software update will not kill a PS3, it can. And does..

The YLOD can be caused by 2 main reasons, Overheating and HDD failure.
What I can suggest, Maybe back up the 500GB HDD onto a computer Format the HDD then put it in the playstation once it's done.
If it works that means that your harddrive has been corrupted and you will probably need to re-download your games/movies.
You can maybe try to put the files back onto the HDD and place it in the Ps3 again.

Is it the fat ps3 that did this? The same thing happened to mine. My guess is that the update made the ps3 overheat some how. Like you I am very upset about this. Your best bet is just to get a new one like I did.

Well, of course, but I think he meant that a successfully installed software update will not break the ps3.
