i think its great advice, ***** paying for a new one out straight, may aswell sell it and buy a new one with the money i get back. But too be honest i dont think it is an overheating problem because if it was then it wouldnt let me watch as many films as i want and not cut out. It only does it with a disc in it so i reckon your right with the blu-ray player needing to be changed do you know how much you can get them for?

but someone mentioned to me today that inside the playstation there is something inbetween the harddrive and the bluray player that stops it getting past a certain temp and if this gel stuff disapears then it'll cut out when it reaches that certain temp. But i had a look on the internet and couldnt find anythin that said that so i reckon it was bull*****.

Once my PS3 shut only the video signal (not audio) after playing for 9 hrs. But  i managed to turn off the PS3 through XMB. I never turned it on for one day and the next day it worked normally. I still dunno wat was the problem. But its definitely not a over heating problem.

                  Did it happen like this  to u anytime?

Videos/movies etc wouldn't heat the system like a game so it could still be that in which case try the following if you havent already (something I do half yearly and my fatty is still running fine and whisper quite):-

-Try taking apart, I only mean the outer case and clean away dust especially from the PSU, use compressed air or blow through grills until no more dust anywhere..

-Check connections while your there.

-Do a file system rebuild and database rebuild after, these options can be found in the maintenance menu:

1. shut off the ps3
2. press and hold the power button until the system beeps twice AND turns off again
3. press hold the power button until the system lets out two fast beeps

4. See Menu

If non of this helps then it most probably is your BD drive!

i used a website www.videogame911.com when i got the yellow light of death. they fix all different types of problems with systems. they saved my data as well. check it out. hope it helps

Do you get a triple bleep when it turns off?
It does sound like an overheating issue, how long before it turns off.

The think you mentioned about the temperature isn't completely correct but its down the right lines. There are heat sinks which capture the heat from the processors, and it has been said the solder (metal connecting the processors to the heat sink) gets too hot and melts, then cools down when the unit is turned off. This can cause it to crack, meaning not a perfect join, and so the heat then cannot dissipate as effectively causing over heating. This is the cause of the famed 'Yellow light of death'.

Should you get the Yellow light of death, don't bother trying to get it fixed. I know it sounds great, £50 for your ps3 working again, but it will go again once it happens once, better to invest in a new system. Wouldn't have thought the blu ray player dying would cause the PS3 to shut down, just stop reading discs.

i have the same problem but only happens with 3d games like uncharted 3 resistance 3 and it beep thre times red light

Get it fixed or get rid of it quickly. There is a component in there that is about to go and very soon.

I had that happen to me twice now. Damn thing kept on freezing or rebooting on me and then i switched it on the other morning and it jumped straight to power off.

And what was Sony's answer ? I had it less than 3 months so we need it back to investigate !!!! Investigate what ? The fact you gave me a piece of equipment that was not fit for the purpose for what it was described and now you have to wait till possibly the new year to get it back.

Morality aside mate, GET RID OF IT AND QUICKLY.

They need to look at it to make sure you you're not trying to scam them. I had the same thing with my 6 month old console. It was replaced with a brand spanking new one about a week later.

One of the reasons why continuous play was stopped because of people having theirs break, registering for CP then waiting a month to make a claim.

This happened to mine just before it got the yellow light. It started turning off when playing games and blu-rays then a few days later dvds and a couple of days after that anything else. Even using iplayer or games on the hard drive. Back up your saves now to be on the safe side.

Try hoovering all the vents on your PS3. My second one started getting really loud then switching off and I cleaned it(didn't take it apart) and its still working now 3 months later
