Imagine a small town that gets post delivered. (That's your 40GB drive.) Royal Mail only need a small sorting office to cope with all the houses. It's a small building on the high street with barely enough room to swing a cat.
Now imagine a big busy city like Glasgow. (That's your Terabyte hard drive.) It needs a huge sorting office that takes up the best part of a block in order to handle the huge number of houses.
So, a larger City/Drive needs a larger space to sort stuff
(More goes on in there than that, but that's one of the main reasons for the larger size.)
