does anyone know how to open router ports?

my PS3 has been having really bad download rates lately even though when i do a internet check it says i should be getting about 1.2Mg a second.

i rang sony and they gave me the ports to open and i managed to get onto my port website but know nothing about what to do next.

i rang my service provider as well virgin media but they sent me through to a company wanting £60 for a one off fix or £10 a month contract.

there must be an easier way, so any help would be great

thanks

you see this is what the port opening website looks like for virgin media (http://help.virginmedia.com/system/selfservice.controller?CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=337901&CURRENT...)

but the information that sony gave me looks like this

tcp 80,443,5223,

port range 10070-10080

udp 3478,7479,3658,10070

and i dont know what goes where and how to do it at all

Re: does anyone know how to open router ports?

Hi sephiroth2k,

Port forwarding or opening is not something you need to pay for and certainly not with a contract!!

You should contact your router manufacturer for assistance, which will be Netgear or Belkin with Virgin I think.  They will be able to talk you through the process, also there may be someone here who have the same router as you and can help.

Unfortunately I cannot help with port forwarding due to the large number of makes and models.

my model number is VMDG280

and i rang netgear for help and they gave me an even better option £59.99 for 6 months or £89.99 for a year . . . . . . has companies become so gready that they take even the most menial tasks and ask for bags of money =/

Are they suggesting they send someone out to your property to do it for you?  Again I think this is unnecessary.

The instructions that Virgin sent you explain the process quite well.

I also googled some results that will help

Re: does anyone know how to open router ports?

no they want to explain it over the phone but want money for it lol

is that the step by step that i posted in the first post?

because it would be simple but i dont know where the longer numbers would go because they only allow 3 numbers per box
