Backups/External Hard Drives

First off, I know there is probably plently of other thread regarding this, but I only have one simple question: when backing-up my ps3, will it back up EVERYTHING? It would seem that my gt5 save is copy protected, so would that mean it is ommitted when i perform a backup?

Also another question: I am interested in changing out my hard drive if you hadnt guessed, what is the max the ps3 will take? I am informed that it is a 2tb, and the ps3 only reads FAT32 formatted external drives no?

Thanks in advance :smileyhappy:

Re: Backups/External Hard Drives

Hi there!

As far as upgrading the interal HDD, as long as it is a standard laptop HDD formatted to FAT32 it should work. As far as I know they go up to 500GB, but who knows what could be on the market now.

As for the external HDD, as long as it is in FAT32 format it will be fine.

Also, any copyrighted material will not back up on the HDD, so to say that everything will back up would not be correct. Whatever is possible to back up, you shouldn't have any problems with. Unfortunately though, some things you won't be able to back up successfully :smileysad:

Hope this helps :smileyhappy:

Re: Backups/External Hard Drives

The requirements for internal HDDs are any notebook drives (2.5") that are SATA II and no thicker than 9.5mm. The filesystem won't matter, as the PS3 will format it on detection anyway. I have my eye on a 640GB Seagate at the moment.

Can't copy or can't backup? There is a difference there. Copying is usually the easiest way, but there are some titles that just won't play along, back up is when you go into system menu and back it up - which will work with all save files. If you are upgrading, get your external drive, formatted in fat32 as previously stated, and back up to that. Install your new hard drive and the choose restore from external hdd. It will all be there as you left it. You will need to activate the system to access any downloaded games etc

Re: Backups/External Hard Drives

So... Your saying even copy-protected save files get backed up?

If so, that just made my day :smileyhappy: Thanks.

Re: Backups/External Hard Drives

[ Edited ]

Actually, that was what I was saying - but it may not be 100% correct... I was basing this on the fact that I have done this, including a couple of RE5 saves, which I thought were copy-protected. Apparently resident evil was patched a while ago, which means that I could be wrong in telling you that your saves will definitely be backed up. Sorry dude, I'll look around and see if there's a definitive answer for you

Edit: yes it will. As I first thought, it does an image of your HDD when you perform the back up. Just learn from my mistake and remove all movies, music that you have other copies of - and you should save a fair bit of time. I won't quote any sources, but type in "does ps3 backup copy protected saves" to google if you want to check yourself before taking the plunge. All the best :smileyhappy:
