Before anybody says anything, this is regarding the platinum version of FFVIII (8) for Playstation with the product code SLES-02080 only.
This version of the game apparently does not boot on any PS3 console, and there have been numerous reports of this, not just myself - the problem being apparentlythat the code is not in the database for booting the game, hence making it hang after the PS logo; but then again that was what I was told, I'm not sure if its true but it does sound reasonable.
Before you ask, yes, the disk is in perfect condition and does work in both a Playsation 1 and 2 console - it is a PAL version, so the problem lies solely with the PS3 itself, and yes, it is a PAL version console.
I have brought this to the attention of Sony before, but got a generic response with absolutely no feedback after, and am hoping that this message is seen by somebody that has the power to actually bring it to the attention of someone who can fix or explain this.
Thank you, and if anybody else has the same problem please help keep this topic alive untill something is done about this, or at the very least given a responce as to why it does not work or is unable to work.

Well, we do say that the backwards playability covers the majority of games. Final Fantasy does not load, and we are aware, we even have an explaination fromthe lovely Maximus as to why...

There is a known issue with the playback of Final Fantasy VIII through backwards compatibility and this is not a problem with either the 4 game discs or your PS3 System.
Unfortunately this is one of the few PS one titles that will not play correctly via the PlayStation 3 system, this particular title has a unique way of loading its titles, as you have probably seen your past experiences in the playing the game, as the opening titles and credits loud in and out the game will freeze to a black screen where the system must be restarted to resume use. However there have been no other reported issues with the other PS one final fantasy titles.
People will shout heresy at me but viii is my sentinmental favourite from the psone golden era of ff (& it wasn't my first fantasy) so its a bit of a shame that this one doesnt work on the PS3, also if your planning on playing it on the PS2 set the disc speed to normal otherwise everything time you go to renzokuken a baddie the game will freeze.

Yet the problem lies with this version only - I would haveabsolutely no problem with this in the slightest if it was every version of thegame that did not work due to some emulation reason. That is something that isreasonable; but the inability to play a single version of that game which is99.99% exactly the same is just unacceptable to me.
I'm sure there has to be some more of a reasonableexplanation then "it has a particular way of loading things", mainlydue to other versions of the game working - why is the platinum versiondifferent? It should be the same code on every disc, just having differentpackaging and non-printed discs shouldn't affect anything.
If there's a better explanation then the one already given then i'll have no problem accepting it, but untill then I refuse to accept the fact that a single version of a game does not work for no real reason.

As pointed out in the above message, this version of Final Fantasy uses a unique way of loading . It is not exactly the same. It's this loading process which causes freezing and inability to play the game.

Also, sorry about having random spaces in between words missing in the post above, i use Word 2007 to spell-check my messages and it randomly removes some formatting without me realising, sadly I can't remember how to edit posts even though I managed to last time.
and you edit by clicking 'options' in the corner of your post, then 'edit message' (within a certain time since posting that is). in case you were wondering how you did it or how to do it again in the future.

I have the same problem.
The strange thing I found though is that disc 4 will load up fine, if i hit new game it will ask for disc 1, when i pop disc 1 in it says wrong disc

I am having exactly the same problem, i have recently purchased the game its self rather than on PSN. As i am collecting them, and my PS3 (60GB) also shows the PS logo then gpoes to a black screen.
this needs to be sorted for players like us
