New hard drive and latest firmware

Hi there.

My 60gb died on 18th November, and I'm getting a refurbished one sent on 3rd December. Can you help with the following :

1.  I'm thinking of putting a new hard drive into the PS3 as soon as it arrives (Before I switch it on 1st time). Is this one okay

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/3516598/Western-Digital-Scorpio-WD3200BEVT-320GB-2-5-Internal-SATA-Har...

2. Someone mentioned on these forums, that when you install a new hard drive, you have to have the latest firmware at hand. Where can I get this from, to download to desktop.

3. If latest firmware is needed can I put it onto a SD card or a cd-r.

The refurbished PS3 I'm getting is coming with a 3 month warranty and after this time I will be paying for Continuous Play with Sony.

4. If the refurbished one is to be sent back I presume I just take out the 320gb hard drive and replace it with the one that came.

Thanks

1= that hardrive does seem to be okay, but i didnt see nothing about the rpm, if was you i'll make sure that the rpm is at a 7000 rpm rate

2=to get the latest firmware try going on the playstation underground or the main uk playstation site to get them

3= yh put the firmware on a memory card or a usb it should work

4= if u do need to send it bak, take out the 320 and put in the orginal but from what i heard these refrub ps3's are very reliable and do have some newer parts in them

Re: New hard drive and latest firmware

1. The rpm is 5400. I thought the 7200rpm was only 1 sec quicker on load times and can cause overheat.

Thanks

Re: New hard drive and latest firmware

1. Yes that one's definately fine, got one myself.

2. Latest firmware can be downloaded from this very site - http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/system-software/detail/item128439/Update-features-%28ver-.... I saved it on a memory stick so presume any other device would be fine, obviously would need a USD connection to communicate with the PS3, that's unless a CDR or RW would work which I personally don't know.

What is important though is that on whatever storage media used you create a folder called 'PS3' and then another folder within this called 'UPDATE' - I understand it is important that both these are in upper case or else the PS3 won't identify the firmware update which in turn will lead to the new HDD not being recognised. So in the storage media the file should be PS3 / UPDATE / whatever the firmware's called. This is quite a handy link : http://www.driverheaven.net/hardware-discussion-support/163176-new-hard-drive-playstation-3-but-will...

3. As above

4. That's absolutely right

Re: New hard drive and latest firmware

No probs.

I've replaced two HDDs as my first PS3 froze. For some strange reason when I replaced the HDD in the first one it didn't even ask for the latest firmware but the second time round it did. Apart from that little issue it went very smoothly so you should have no trouble.
