Obtaining NAT Type 2

[ Edited ]
The most common problem at the moment achieving NAT Type 2 stems from attempting to route through two subnets. This results from connecting a wireless or wired router to a 'modem' which itself is also a router.

If the first three numbers in the IP address of your devices differ then this is the case. For example, a common modem may have an address of 10.0.0.x while the router may have an address of 192.168.0.x. The first three 'octets' address the subnet and the fourth is an address on that subnet. This is also the address you type into a browser to access the configuration page. Default addresses for devices can be found in the manual or on the internet.

To resolve this issue, one of the devices needs to have its routing functions turned off and be placed into 'bridge' mode.

See this link for details:
Full Bridge mode Tutorial

Instructions for the first step relating to the Siemens 4200 modem commonly provided by Telstra are here (take your pick):

Siemens SpeedStream 4200 Bridge Mode
SpeedStream 4200 to Bridge Mode

Alternatively, here is a link for bridging the second router (not recomended with the Siemens modem)
Using a Second router as a Switch/Hub/WAP

From this point UPnP should take over and allow the PS3 to open the ports it requires to communicate over the network. If you still have Type 3, ensure that UPnP is enabled in your router (the one that isn't bridged), or alternatively assign your PS3 a static IP (which you may want to do anyway to give your PS3 a fixed address for things like media streaming), and manually foward the required ports to its address in the router. You can first try adding the PS3 to the router's DMZ which has the effect of opening all ports, and will indicate whether port-forwarding will be successful.

Giving your PS3 a Static IP and Port-Forwarding Instructions

portforward.com - PlayStation Network (Select router for instructions)

Ports:
TCP 80, 443, 5223
UDP 5223, 3478, 3479, 3658

Hopefully that helps and I haven't missed anything.

hey mate i have the speedstream router 4200 from optus and i did what u had sed in your other post n it completly killed my internet i called optus up and they said that optus doesnt like goin into full bridge mode so i have it on this thing called napt n its connected to my router and my router is netcomm nb5540 and ive tried that port fowarding but still its nat type three do you think its my router that is jst to old coz i dont even know how update the firmware on it but if you know bout this router please let me no

Apparently Optus requires a different setup to BigPond for bridging the modem. A quick Google finds this guide, which obviously I cannot verify myself, but seems to know what it's talking about:

How to Setup an Optus Speedstream 4200 modem in Bridge Mode

"Step 5:
Set the correct operation mode. This is the most important difference between the BigPond and Optus Firmware versions. Don’t be fooled into thinking the Optus or Full Bridge option is correct. It must be NAPT, as shown below because the other options don’t work!"

Ok, having done that, looking up your router at portforward.com it says:

"The NB5540 will not allow you to forward enough ports, to run PlayStation Network. You should try using the DMZ portion of this router if it is available. Alternatively you can try switching the router to bridged mode."

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netcomm/NB5540/PlayStation_Network.htm

Unfortunately, switching the router to bridge mode will not get you NAT2 with the Speedstream, so hopefully the DMZ will work. Or you can plug the modem directly into the PS3 if that is possible and use the PPPoE option there and should get NAT1.

deadmann , I have a D-Link DSL 504G 4-port wired modem-router , so there is no separate device to put in to bridge mode

I want to smash my router up

Re: Obtaining NAT Type 2

STICKY THIS!!!! I wish I had found it months ago !!!!

I've got a Belkin N wireless router and Speedstream4200 modem, I'm sick of lag

I've set ip addresses

I've port forwarded

set to DMZ

and nothing works, now I find out the bloody modem is blocking ports and DMZ,

AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGHHHHHHHHH

I knew I  had the router set up right, but the curry munchers at belkin never mentioned it could be the modem. They just say "It should work"

Once again STICKY THIS

Re: Obtaining NAT Type 2

Great, another system update and another time my NAT has dropped to 3. I don't get why an update changes the NAT, you'd think it shouldn't.

I couldn't figure out why I kept getting kicked out of online games, then checked the network connection. Time to read up on what I have to do to fix this, again.

No I don't have no xbox, wii or other console, so every game is a PS3 exclusive as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Obtaining NAT Type 2

good luck Luis.

What is your setup? Do you have a separate modem and router?

Re: Obtaining NAT Type 2

No it's a Belkin N Wireless Router all in one deal. I just realised the last time this happened was with my old standard Bigpond Siemens Speedstream modem.

I don't think it's a modem problem, just some setting on the PS3 keeps getting kicked around after an update.

I'm playing inFAMOUS at the moment any (no online) so not that fussed about it.
