PS3 Slim HDMI audio output

Hi!

I recently brought a new PS3 slim 160gb and have connected it up to my new Dennon AVR-1912 recevier via an HDMI cable.  The problem I seem to be having is that I can't configure the PS3 to recongise that Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD are supported output formats.

The steps I followed while setting up the PS3 where:

1. Go to Settings -> Sounds Settings -> Audio Output Settings on the PS3

2. Selected HDMI as the connection type

3. Selected Automatic

The list of supported output formats is displayed but it does not include Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD.

If I try and setup the output options manually both Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD are in the list but they are disabled (greyed out) and can't be selected.  Is this normal??  I would have thought that if you select manual you can select what ever you want ...

I know I can configure the PS3 to decode both these formats and output them as PCM to the receiver and this is working OK.  This is more a test that things are setup ok ...

Please use plain text.

Re: PS3 Slim HDMI audio output

I've given up worrying about this stuff. I think it's a compatibility issue. I have no trouble enabling TrueHD or DTS-HD on my rig but half the time I have to switch to PCM or back to bitstream because the movie starts playing but there are no voices. I suspect for some reason your Denon is not telling the PS3 that it can play these formats. See if they have a firmware update. PS3s get updates all the time but the rest of your equipment rarely does.

Just to be on the safe side, you could try another HDMI cable.

Re: PS3 Slim HDMI audio output

Yeah thats right, usually in most cases the PS3 will actively try and detect what outputs are supported by the TV and reciever.

I cant remember which update it was, but when DTS 5.1 was released as a supported output the PS3 would automatically decode it. So in the case where you would manually select DTS on the PS3, the reciever would not actually display that DTS was enabled as the PS3 was decoding it already.

It just sounds like for some reason the PS3 is detecting what formats are supported via HDMI, to be honest i dont think there is much in the way of TS other than testing with another cable or brand of TV
