Yea, you could just stand it up, i wouldnt tho, its asking for trouble.  And $24 for a stand? i wouldnt pay that either.

I had the same problem as you, mr. bond, in the end i just cut out 4 cups from an egg carton, cut out an inner sole from a shoe, and glued it to the tops off the cup thingies, to absorb any vibrations.  Now my ps3 is raised about an inch, so i have no reason to stand it up any more.

It stays relatively cooler since doing this,  and since it didnt cost anything, and i dont have to worry about my ps3 falling over, im happy.

I havent got a slim so I cant comment too much but the PS3 standard version sits vertically with no issues, mine has been like that on the table (near the edge mind you) since I got it (I preorded it, so since they've been released) with nothin near a close call. Then again the slim may be more top heavy compared to the width, you'll just need to test it out.

i did the same using white foam mateI cut 4 circular pieces and placed them on the corners and now it stays cooler cuz the air flows beneath. and its very stable it doesnt shake at all.So saved ourselves usingthe creativity I guess,and if companies tries to overcharge this kind of accessories I guess we will be doing these kind of things for a long timlol

I don't have a slim but i love my vertcal stand, matches the blue lights on my amp 

Note: down the right hand side of the PS3 is laptop cooling pad

I have one of those stands too.  I have to switch the lights off though because they can be distracting and intense.  The added USB ports in the back are handy.

Yeah those USB ports in the back are handy, i have my PS eye and 4 port (powered) USB hub plugged into the stand and the laptop cooler is plugged directly into the PS3.......keeps things looking neater

Twenty four bucks plus currency conversion is peanuts considering the investment in the product. If a slim gets damaged and you don't have one, you'll be whining "Oh I wish I brought a stand"

and if it overheats and dies you'll come on here whining about the quality of Sony products!

How about go buy a pack of 4 doorstoppers, they worked for an overheating DVD player I had, and only $8 at Bunnings.

Mine never has yet because I NEVER use unauthorised peripherals with anything I buy just in case they could cause a problem.  As for whining, NOPE. I'm old enough to know that coming on here and whining incessantly about something gone wrong will get you nowhere due to the nature of this forum. There are proper channels for that which I always use.
