Hi all.
Sadly it seems my first PS3 I bought (40GB Fat model) has died on me.
I came home last night to find the red standby light blinking on and off.
I shut off the mains power and turned it back on and tried turning the console on but I only starts up for about 3 seconds then beeps and shuts down again with the blinking red light.
Really upset now ![]()
But I do understand it went for just over 5 years of use so I accept it's time came...the only thing I'm worried about now is how can I get any of my data off from that PS3 if I did buy a new one to replace it?
I had installed a 320GB hdd in it.. from what I remember..I can't just swap that hard drive into the new PS3 can I??? I think it will format it right???
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

gavsta..i was wondering to ask about that whole PS plus auto backup thingie..lol
How exactly does it work exactly??
Does it by it self always back up ur game saves??
Can they be accessed on differant PS3 consoles that have the same PSN acount user on them too aswell??
Funny thing today is i was going through my old external hard drives and found a PS3 folder on one of them that shows a back i did back in 2010 (totally forgot about it lol).
Would u know if i got a new slim could i use that backup from my old PS3 i did to restore any data from it onto the new slim one??
Thanks.

Just updated to 4.22 with my 5 year old ps3 and bang! RED flashing lights! constantly..... so sad
I used PS+ for a year and it works the same ways a any other cloud based system. You choose to backup your save game data onto the cloud storage that PS+ gives you access to, and on another ps3 system you sign in with your account and just download the save date onto that system.
It stays on the cloud server until you choose to delete it or until your not a PS+ member anymore.
It would be great if it possible to save game dato onto a USB drive ínsted. I guess it is if its FAT32?
How do you back up your family movies, pictures and music? Lucky for me i also have everything on a external harddrive for my PC, I guess its never a good idear to leave stuff onto the ps3 system only when it goes down ther is now way i know of the get the data back onto a computer.
I also would like if there by any changes is possible to use a restore a old full backup from the 60GB model to a new 160 or 320 GB model???
Thanks in advance for any advice :-)

I thought 4.21 was the latest update???
I too only a few days it when i updated my PS3 (the fat original one) to 4.20 and then those few days later is when it died..maybe just happened at the same time i don't know...hmmm
Ok sounds not bad the cloud save ..Can it be set to auto save to the cloud as well??
Another thing is say you did sign up for the membership..once the 12 months is up does it auto renew itself or do you have to sign up again and pay for it..
I remember with the Xbox 360 to stop the charge you had to ring up customer support to stop it..
Last night I actually picked up a new 160GB slim from Kmart ($229).
I found a older backup I had made back in 2010 and restored it onto the new slim.. The only message that came up it said 'this backup was created on a different PS3- and not all data will be recovered'
I checked it out most of my game save files seemed to have gone through but to be honest I cant remember if and any are missing now..being so long ago.(I stopped playing games on this PS3 that broke down-was only using it for PlayTV)
Also to say i did pull apart my broken PS3 and apply new thermal paste on both the CPU & GPU...gave it a good clean off all the dust & even tried by swapping out the hdd with its original 40GB hdd..
Put i all back and it still does the exact same thing.Powers up for 3 seconds then shuts down again ![]()
The only thing I think it can be now is the power supply box maybe???

The newest update must be 4.20 my mistake I thought it was 4.22 http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps
Regarding the ps+ save function i can't remember if there was an auto setting. There are automatic download of game patches and things of your interests from the PSN store.
I guess the membership was cancelled after the 12 moth and you manually should confirm if you would like to continue being a + member.
I also have bought the new slim model, but way before the other one broke down. Guess its pointless to sent the old one in for repairs http://us.playstation.com/support/answer/index.htm
The blinking red light indicates an internal error that only can be repaired by sending it in! And I have not found any help full videos of how to repair it yourself.
I think Sony have made a good entertainment console, but a shame that the backup process sucks. I will try to make a full backup, but the changes are slim with a system that keeps turning off by itself.
I will wait a couple of days now and try to disconnect all cables and pull the hard drive out and back in again. And see if that helps just enough to make a backup and hopefully be able to resore the most of my 500GB PS3 system in a new console.
Is there by any change some programs for PC so you can read the PS3 hard disk?
Can i save game data (save mames) onto a USB flash drive?

I have had the same problem as CozmoZIP...As soon as i installed the new update i counldn't connect any of my controllers or headsets immediately but i got one working by accidently dropping it but then 2 hours later it freaked out and my controller disconnected and wont work again(gone back to flashing lights) I have reset ps3 and controller and nothing will work, looks like i am going to have to send it in ![]()

seems funny that i see alot of people just updated and boom! system died. and they seem to be older models too. just like mine that died tonight for no reason. havent played it but maybe twice since update and maybe for about an hour both times. hope it just my imagination but it all seems kinda funny to me.
