PS3 graphics/freezing problem

I bought a preowned 60gb PS3 yesterday and finally managed to get it connected up to my monitor today after hunting around for a HDMI-DVI cable. Everything was fine, I set up a Playstation Network account, had a look around the PSN Store and played a couple of demos, which also worked perfectly. Then I put in a copy of Jak 3 (PS2 game) and now I get this huge graphics glitch and crash every time I try to play something, it's got so bad now that I can't even boot it up long enough to do a system restore/format or anything.

The following is a photo of what it looks like, although it's not always the same, it's just random strips of colour, and then the controller stops working completely and the PS3 freezes.

Anyone got an idea of what it could be? Maybe something to do with the hard disk? I've had a look around but can't find many people with the same problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, this day has sucked so far.

Re: PS3 graphics/freezing problem

O.K i don't know what is or could be causing the problem but if you do wan to restore the ps3 to factory settings then you can follow this guide :

This will allow you to do it before the ps3 freezes.... hopefully :smileyhappy:

Re: PS3 graphics/freezing problem

That kind of look (green splotches etc) tends to suggest a fried graphics card; you'll have to call Sony tech support, as I expect that it will need fixing/replacing.

Note that it seems unlikely to me that the activities you describe would cause overheating, unless the ps3 is in a badly ventilated area or if you have it standing upright the wrong way up (i.e. standing on the fan output).

Re: PS3 graphics/freezing problem

The graphics chip is warping off the solder points due to heat/age/bad luck. There is no way to fix it outside of a sony lab.

I've been a victim of it myself this week, and have found it to be a real problem with aging 60GB's, spreading fast.

Sorry. I wouldn't tell Sony it was pre-owned, tell them you bought it at launch.  Couldn't hurt to try :smileywink:

Re: PS3 graphics/freezing problem

I had a problem 2 weeks ago with my 60gig not reading discs, contacted Sony and they took it away and fixed it.

Got it back today and I'm having exactly the same problem as you. I've contacted them again and they are sending a replacement 60gig at the start of Feb.

I'd give them a ring, as someone else said don't mention that you bought it second hand, and they should arrange for it to be fixed or replaced.

Good Luck
